Is there a tutorial or FAQ or something that would get me going on MSTS BIN? It all sounds interesting. I have looked around on the boards but the info seems fragmented.

I tried to install the thing but get an error message "The file C:/....train.exe" is not a valid previous version and could not be upgraded".

I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction to learn the basics of this intriguing improvement to my trusty old MSTS.

Regards, James

There's a "unified" forum here:

Read the "MSTSbin Frequently Asked Questions" stickey first...

You may not have the v1.2 MSTS train.exe already installed.

James,

Your best bet is just to download it and install it, and worry about it later. Installation is simple, and yes it comes with a .doc file.

The only really "arcane" thing you might find about it is preparing and or installing some night or reverse cabs. Frankly, even if you are not interested in those, there are a host of other reasons to install it, as I found out. The whole trainsim experience, in my estimation, is vastly improved just by having it.

EDIT: As Charlie said, you need to have Microsoft's by-now ancient patch installed. Double check the FAQs he pointed you to.

Good lucky and happy simming :-)

Just install it, man! For just the internal improvements alone it's worth the small effort.

I wasn't able to run Cajon Pass for more than 5 minutes without crashing; now it runs end to end w/out a hitch.

I agree that it's a great addition, and would recommend it to everyone. I vaguely remember seeing a thread about "sound issues" after installing Bin 1.6. I've searched and can't locate it though. Does anyone remember what that was all about? It seems like in some engines and routes my sound level has decreased. No big deal, I guess, but I was wondering what it was about.
