View Full Version : Head-out view sounds

Just noticed after the installing the latest patch that the headout view sounds are silent when looking forward and slowly fade in as the view is rotated to the rear. All sound options are maxed. Is it just me?

I noticed the same thing an hour or so ago. Unreleased locomotive I was testing using bin 1.7

Dave,
If I remember correctly, you have a number of mini-routes installed. Were you able to confirm this is a MSTSBin issue?

I'm 100% bin right now.
As for the loco sound, I ran another .eng file in a different route and it took exhibitted the same pattern -- very quiet looking forward, sound increasing as you pan to the rear (which in itself is not really wrong).
But there seems to be other sound anomolies: I can pull the camera back from the loco several hundred metres and the sound volume does not change. Yesterday I noticed it was substantially louder in the cab than outside.... substantially louder in idle than in run 1.
I don't know that any of these things are problems w/ bin... might be my setup, might be the .eng files, might be bin, might be some combination of the above... might even be correct. I dunno, 'cept they didn't seem right to me. See, by and large, I build things, not run them :) so I'm not really the person to count on to report such things. I doubt I would have said anything except when reading the base note of this thread I thought gee, that's exactly what I noticed an hour ago, I wonder if it is a bin issue?

Oh well, I will not be very helpful in solving this problem as my sound seems to behave as expected. The only thing that comes to mind is that external sounds in MSTS are stereo and there is a hardware or driver problem with the left sound channel. I really don't think it is a MSTSBin issue or we would have heard more about it.

Hi Rich !
Scraping around in the depths of my brain, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the MSTS sound *.wav files need to be a certain format to provide STEREO effects ? ;-)
Here is some on the subject of MSTS sounds:

Otto,
You're right about MSTS wanting a specific WAV format. Since FDL 12 has this problem with all of his locos, it is probably something else.

Hi Rich !
Tested all the mp3kcons.zip diesels, the 3D-Trains Warbonnet and NALW's BigBlowUP, as well as the BigBoy and Northern Pacific steam locos and none of them have any problems with sounds in the Head-Out view !
Must have something to do with certain locos and how the use specific sound.wav files ?

Yes, but the external locomotive sounds (____eng.sms) don't have stereo. You have to format those as a .wav sound under PCM signed 16 mono. (If you're using Goldwave). Sounds also need to have a sample rate of 11025 HZ.

The loco's I was using were from Marc Nelson at 3dtrains.

I will test them tonight. What version of Bin are you using? Latest or last stable? So far I have not had that problem, but I will try with Marc's F's and Geeps.

Just tested these 3D-Trains consists:
F7A - ATSF 300L - Super Chief
F7A - SP 61080 - 60s SP F-Unit Helpers
and had no problems with the head-out views sounds.
Try this: www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/downloads/soundcfg-dat.zip

Like Otto, my testing also showed no problems with Marc's locomotives and their headout views.
Besides Otto's suggestion of soundcfg.dat, have you tried setting your sound acceleration to BASIC? Some cards give problems with anything other than basic sound acceleration. Also are you using onboard sound? Some onboard audio setups don't work properly in MSTS.

I just started having this issue too now that I installed the latesd version of BIN on a fresh MSTS (updated) build (all default stock stuff). It didn't happen before the patch and I have nothing else installed.
Update: just installed some of my own engines that I know worked right in the past. They are silent until I switch view to the car behind the engine, then I get normal expected head-out sound effects from the engine.
