View Full Version : Interestiing occurance installing bin

I had something interesting happen when I tried to install the latest bin. I got the "wrong version of train.exe, file not up-dated" error message. Now, before someone posts "Install the patch", I need to reveal some background;
I bought the game about a week ago for just under $10.00. It came in a box that had Ubisoft Clearance on the front. I immediately downloaded and installed the patch, which broke the game. This led me to check and discover that my copy already had the patch applied.
Date: December 11, 2001, 6:27:28 PM
Version: 1.16.5.912
File Version: Patch v1.4
It was a clean install of this copy that gave me that error message. Which made me think, since this was a later production of the CDs, was this version just a little higher than a clean install of the original game plus the downloaded patch? Was this what was causing the error?
To test this, I downloaded the patch, did a clean install of my copy, and then down-graded it with the downloaded patch. I then proceeded to install the latest MSTSbin. It installed fine, no error message. Interesting, eh.
Dave
P.S. If the developer is interested, I kept a copy of the train.exe file from the original install.

Hello Dave,
Your copy of MSTS by Ubisoft does have the same version number and file version as the update by Microsoft. The only difference I see is my MSTS update has a different time stamp.
My Version:
Date : Tuesday, December 11, 2001, 3:27:28 PM
File Version : 1.16.5.912
Description : Microsoft Train Simulator Patch v1.4
I don't know if this would cause the problem? but I guess something did, seeing you had to install the update from Microsoft's website before you could install the MSTSbin patch, interesting?
Take care,
Rich S.

Rich,
Despite the apparent identical "File Version", they may be at least somewhat different. The EXE with the 3:27:28 PM time stamp is the one that let's you run without the CD.
Not having the 6:27:28 PM version, I don't know about it. If it lets you run without the CD, then that implies that there are at least three "V1.4" EXE's out there. :)
Perhaps BIN is really specifically looking for the 3:27:28 PM version.
regards,
charlie
EDIT: Forgot to say that my theory has always been that the 3:27:28 PM was intended for internet-download upgrades of v1.0. A few hours later, the 6:27:28 PM was generated for new-in-the-box sales and given a mild "copy protection" of a CD requirement.

Bottom line is MSTS bin only installs with a version patched from the MSTS website, even if this only changes the datestamp.

Did a check on all my multiple versions of the Train.exe and find that the December 2001 versions have either a 15:27 or 16:27 time stamp, but all are version 1.16.5.912 / Patch 1.4, none having given MSTSBin patches problems installing !

An up-date; I recently had to do a re-install and thought I would check out what charlie posted about the 6:27:28 version adding code to require that the CD be in the drive in order to play the game.
After a clean install of time-stamp 6:27:28, I needed the CD in the drive to play.
After down-grading with down-loaded patch 1.2, train.exe had a time-stamp of 3:27:28 and didn't need the CD in the drive to play the game.
Seems charlie was right. Dave

There should be no confusion as to which version of the Train.exe a MSTSBin installer needs to install any of it's patches.
It's the Train.exe which comes with the Version 1.2 Train Simulator Update from:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsimulator/downloads.asp
and below are it's properties:

OTTODAD, I'm quite aware of the different versions. Observe;
This is what the Properties shows after a clean install;
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114232.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114233.jpg
Note the date and time on the Modified line.
Trying to install MSTSbin 1.7 gives the "wrong version" error message.
After "down-grading" by installing the patch I get this in the Properties;
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114234.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114235.jpg
Note the date and time on the Created line.
MSTSbin 1.7 installs fine to this version. Note that the Version page of Properties is the same for both time stamps. The only other difference between the two as I posted earlier is that the clean install requires the CD to be in the drive to play and the down-grade does not.

Dave,
Could you show us the properties of train.exe after you have successfully applied the Bin patch? The only difference I see is that your "clean" install shows the date you installed it as the creation date, and it has the correct modification date. Perhaps the Bin patch is reading the "wrong" date. Perhaps it should use the File Version info instead of the creation date. Is your "original" version the MS version, Atari, or one of the others? I purchased a "cheap" backup Atari version ( United States ), but I have never installed it, so I don't know if the install of it does as yours does.

OTTODAD, I'm quite aware of the different versions.
Then you should also be aware of this too, which requires no checking of Train.exe properties, all versions easily identifiable by their file sizes and dates:
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114240.jpg
The first is the one any MSTSBin patch will have a problem with as is not the 1.4 Train.exe !
It's not the "Creation" date which matters, it's the date the file was "Modified last" which does and must correspond with it's file date ! Your 1.4 version's creation date was altered by having been accessed in January 2007, but it's creation date should not have been changed ! Could be that George did, reading it prior to installing an MSTSBin patch ?

drjoe, here's the Properties pages after bin 1.7 has been installed;
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114268.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114269.jpg
You can see the changed File Version number in the right lower box.
To repeat where I got my copy of the game; I bought it about two weeks ago. It came in a box with UBI eXclusive printed above the picture of the diesel. It's for the PC.
The difference in where the creation date appears is probably because the first two attachments are of the Properties of a copy of the original file. The Properties in the other two attachments (and the two in this post) are of the originals.
OTTODAD, the file size is shown on the General page of the Properties. Checking in View/Details I get;
train.exe 4,764KB Application 11/12/2001 6:27PM (clean install)
train.exe 3,997KB Application 03/01/2007 12:29PM (down-grade plus bin)
All this being said, it's no big deal since I have been able to install MSTSbin after finding that down-grading my copy of the game allows this. Also, it works as a no CD crack (which is a bonus). I originally posted because (with these newer copies of the game) I thought someone would be interested in how I was able to get MSTSbin to install.

Dave,
I am curious what the "creation" date is on a "clean" install using your "newer" UBI CD's. If it is the same as your "copied" version you show, everyone using the UBI CD's is going to have a problem with installing Bin. The "removal" of the CD requirement has long been something "cured" when using the downloaded update over the 1.2 CD version, so I recommend it to anyone installing a "newer" version of MSTS anyway. If they now need it to install MSTS Bin ( instead of just for the CD "problem" ), I wonder what happens when MS decides to remove the "online" update from its servers.

It does not matter where you got your MSTS CDs from, just make sure that you download and install the official Version 1.2 (1.4) Train Simulator December 2001 update from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsimulator/downloads.asp
before installing a MSTSBin 1.6 or higher patch for the first time.
Make a copy of it in case a later un-install of a MSTSBin patch did not restore it !

Bigger question is what happens if some other company buys MSTS from UBI and when you try to install the MSTS download patch it says "You already have the latest version of MSTS installed", but I guess we'll cross that bridge then.

The last I am was aware of is that ATARI are the sole distributors of MSTS and if anybody else would mess with patching the Train.exe then I would simply install their version of MSTS and then replace it's Train.exe with the official 1.2 (1.4) patch, followed by installing a MSTSBin patch ! ;-)

Well, according the the start of this thread, UbiSoft picked it up somewhere along the line.
Although, for those of us with Microsoft original install CD's (guarded to prevent scratches) and downloaded and multiple backed up MSTS patches, it doesn't much matter.

Microsoft no longer owns the rights to MSTS in the United States. They were sold to Atari in 2005, and the game is now distributed in the US by Atari as value software. In the European Union, the game is now distributed by Empire Interactive and Ubisoft. Ubisoft also distributes MSTS in small quantities in Australia.
Forgot that ATARI only covers the USA market ! ;-)

Having COMPLETELY trashed my MSTS installations -- plural -- I went looking for my disks to reinstall and start over. Can't find the darn things! So I headed over to the Atari web page and FWIW, MSTS is no longer found anywhere there.
There are a few sellers on the web and on eBay (I deceided I better buy another copy so I picked up one off eBay). It does not seem to be widely available anymore.
So perhaps -- just perhaps -- if you need a new copy for whatever reason, you might consider acting now.

So what is happening when you try to run MSTS in the installed from CDs Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator folder ?
What response do you get ?
I can let you have a copy of the MSTS Registry key to run this one and then help you get the other MSTS copies working too !
What drive was your MSTS installed into from CDs and what is the drive letter of your CD-Rom drive ?

Well... many things seem to be wrong. Here's one example, from a minroute:
Using the command "C:\miniroute1\train.exe" -toolset to launch train.exe Patch v1.4 I (win explorer shows 1.16.5.912, date created Nov 9, 2005. That get the route editor running. I select a route, it appears, and without touching anything, I wait about 30 seconds... and RE aborts. Trying again, this time wanting to get the jump on things, I simply try and rotate the camera view... gets an abort even faster.
Using the command "C:\miniroute1\train.exe" /fsaa /nofiltercab it gets to the screen where I click Drive, then it crashes.
Over in the regular installation of MSTS, where bin 1.7 is supposed to be, I use the command "C:\Train Simulator\train.exe" /fsaa /nofiltercab. It gets about 3/4 thru the loading screen and then pops up an error message that says "Failed to open file: routes\.\sigcfg.dat". Now I've checked all of the routes and they all have sigcfg.dat in them... except for My Route, which I know is from George. Where's his file?? If I choose to ignore the error and click continue I get the Sim running, select a route and activity and then begin the initialization window -- the one with the little white rectangles that run across the bottom. It gets 95% to the end, after it says initializtion and setup complete, then it aborts.
The behavior of the route editor here is the same as in miniroute1.
Over in a different miniroute, I see I have MSTS-bin 1.6... but no uninstall information whatsoever.
Meanwhile, in yet another miniroute, its RE is fine. It uses the command "C:\miniroute4\train.exe" -toolset -- Patch v1.4 I (win explorer shows 1.16.5.912, date created Nov 9, 2005. And the sim runs there.
What I want is to get the default train sim properly installed to bin 1.7. To remove 1.6 from the miniroute where it is (NO uninstall data) and to put 1.7 there. To also get 1.7 in the first miniroute. I will leave the one that's working alone. Then I want to break out several routes from the default installation into their own miniroutes.
It would be nice to have a list of the files George provides -- with their paths and extensions -- so I could see if I have the right or wrong versions of whatever.
Real PITA this stuff is sometimes, don't you think?

O.K. Dave, here goes !
First of all, MSTS no longer needs any command line switches for Anisotropic nor Antialiasing if the computer uses a recent graphics cards providing both ! I would also not use any other command line switches with a MSTSBin Train.exe which may not like them, other than the -toolset one to run the Editors !
These are the folders any MSTSBin 1.6 and later installs into any selected copy of MSTS, having selected to use it's Transparent Driveraids:
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114299.jpg
and here are the files they contain:
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114300.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114301.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114302.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114303.jpg
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/up1/114304.jpg
These two DLL files to be copied into the same folder in the MSTS copy the installed MSTSBin Train.exe is in.
The 2005 Train.exe you are showing is an invalid one and heaven knows where you got this one from.
IT IS NOT THE TRAIN.EXE MSTSBIN NEEDS TO INSTALL ITSELF !!! - THE DECEMBER 2001 ONE IS !!!
Now this is what I want you to do in any copy of MSTS, MAIN or MINI:
DELETE the following if present:
MSTSBIN_BACKUP folder
Uninst_MSTS Patch*.* files
Train.exe
COPY / PASTE a [/b]DECEMBER 2001 Train.exe[/b] into the folder the Launcher.exe is in.
Any such MSTS copy will run it's Train.exe and everything in it's ROUTES and TRAINS folders as long as the installed MSTSBin was not a version 1.5 one and even if a previous version of MSTSBin 1.6 or later has been un-installed or not. If it's previous GLOBAL and GUI files are still present then the Train.exe 1.4 will still use what they do with the exception of being able to fill the enlarged RE Placement window and see the new diagnostic F5 HUD part.
This being so you can then re-install any version of MSTSBin 1.6 or later into any copy of MSTS, MAIN or MINI as long as there is a Version 1.2 Patch 1.4 December 2001 Train.exe in it and the MSTSBIN_BACKUP folder has been deleted. To keep things tidy the previous installed Uninst_MSTS Patch*.* files should also be deleted but will not interfere with a re-install of MSTSBin 1.6 or later if left behind !
Looking forward to hearing that all your MSTS copies are working ! :7

My (very new) card is configured to take these commands from each program but I'll try removing the switches to see what happens.
> The 2005 Train.exe you are showing is an invalid one and heaven knows where you got this one from.
It's a perfectly valid .exw Otto. If you do file properties and change any attribute, be it read only, to turn off the archive flag, or to insert into the Author field the stribg GEORGE, or any other of a dozen things, the date modified field is reset to $today. And in the case of the default directory structure the file came from George because it's internal version id is 1.7 whereas the one in the first miniroute was copied out out of another miniroute -- the one miniroute that works.
Ok, I checked my default installation and I have everything you cited in your post, except as noted right here: The tran.exe is version 1.7 but the date modified is different. global\Common.txt is dated Dec 2, not Dec 3. Gui\Driveraids, all present except once again mine are 1 day different from yours (I suspect the file gets timestamped in GMT but displayed as local time). Ditto for the other files. What's missing is Routes/My Route/Sigcfg.dat.
When I run the route editor in this environment, selecting either Donner Pass or Tehacchipi Pass, neither comes up right. DP lacks track and terrain; TP puts the camera underground and then it aborts. Selecting a copy of a mini route, RE aborts before it displays anything. Selecting Northeast Corridor seems to work fine.
This odd combination of failure and success *suggests* something has gone wrong within the routes directory. Except for the missing sigcfg.dat from \my route I've no idea what that might be. When I copied sigcfg.dat from another route and put the copy into \My routes, I get the same results.
Moving on....
>
COPY / PASTE a DECEMBER 2001 Train.exe into the folder the Launcher.exe is in.
I don't have one dated Dec 2001. I have several that are marked internally as v1.4 and from win explorer show 1.16.5.912 AND that version does work within one miniroute.
I did find one problem and corrected it -- miniroute1 was missing the common.iom and common.txt files from \global. I took copies from the one miniroute that worked and pasted them here but made no difference at all... RE aborts a few seconds after displaying the route.
I'm going to go check a few other things....

An update:
Miniroute1 is now working as v1.4; I did find a Dec 2001 version of train.exe and copied it into the miniroute. I also created an activity, path, and service where before none existed. Both the sim and RE seem to be fine now.
I switched over to the default directory where v1.7 is located. I had copied a current copy of miniroute1 there. I deleted the old activities, paths, and services and created a new one. On running the sim and selecting the newly created activity, the sim launches, tells me there is a problem with a sigcfg.dat file somewhere in one of the routes -- I choose to continue anyway -- and the sim starts, places the consist in the right location, but absolutely no terrain of any kind is displayed. Essentially what I said RE did to DP and TP.
So now I have two miniroutes in v1.4 that work, another miniroute in v1.6 that seems to work (but no uninstall methods present), and the default directory in v1.7 that does not work.
**EDIT**
Ok, I updated miniroute1 to bin v1.7. Editor seems to work but I notice the placement window appears to be default sized, not enlarged as I expected. That seems odd. Sim itself seems normal.
A question: Does George have certain expectations of files being present and/or specific dates in any other directories besides the ones you have already mentioned? Maybe Fonts or Sounds, or whatever?

Hi Dave !
The default directory in v1.7 that does not work.
Do the DELETEs in that route too, restore the DECEMBER 2001 Train.exe and try running anything in it and if all is well install the 1.7.0103 patch again. If there still is a sigcfg.dat missing then check the routes to see which one it is and replace it from a BACK-UP of that route !
But remember to COPY the Translated DLLs\EN\*.dll files into the folder where the installed 1.6 / 1.7 train.exe is. That applies to all copies of MSTS a MSTSBin 1.6 / 1.7 has been installed into. If you do not then you might not see the enlarged Placement window in the RE nor the diagnostic part of the F5 HUD !
Ok, I updated miniroute1 to bin v1.7. Editor seems to work but I notice the placement window appears to be default sized, not enlarged as I expected.
If you use Train.exe -toolset to run the editors in a MINI route then it expects to find a Dialog.dll - 6.Aug.06 in the MINI route's root folder. If you use Launcher.exe -runeditor then it looks for the Dialog.dll in the MSTS Registry paths !
A question: Does George have certain expectations of files being present and/or specific dates in any other directories besides the ones you have already mentioned? Maybe Fonts or Sounds, or whatever?
What you see in my screen shots is what MSTSBin 1.6 or higher installed into my C:\DUMMY folder which contains a December 2001 Train.exe !
Who opened the December 2001 Train.exe in 2005 and altered something in it causing the "Modified Date" to change ? As far as I am aware of it is only a change to the binary or other code of a file which alters the "Modified Date".

Okay. It's back to v1.4
> and try running anything in it and if all is well....
Nope... all is not well. When I launch the editor and open up Donner Pass I see just forests, no terrain or track or anything else(I'm supposed to be at Truckee). If I roll the camera and look straight up into the sky, far above me I see track and various interactive lines and stuff like that. The camera position shows my Y axis (vertical) to be 2m. Looking into the correct world file I see that track objects are > 1700m.
When I try and move the camera up to it RE dies -- as in it just disappears. There is no attempt to phone home to Uncle Bill.
This happens on several other routes too. I'm using Donner pass as the example because I've never done any editing in it whatsoever. It should be just as purchased.
> Who opened the December 2001 Train.exe in 2005 and altered something in it causing the "Modified Date" to change?
Why me, of course. You can do it too. Use win explorer, right click on an executable and select properties. Go to the summary tab and type anything you want. Say ok. Look at the modified date... it'll be $today. I expect there are other ways to do it as well. As for why this was done... at this date I've no idea.

Hi Dave !

Say ok.
I have no "Summary" tab in properties and have neither SP-1 nor SP-2 installed, this sims only WIN-XP do not need ! Is that why I can not see it ?
As to the remaining problem, I just tried every trick in the book to replicate your problem and can not !
Used a major MSTS MINI 1.7. copy and replaced it's Train.exe with the Patch 1.4 one and all works, even with all the other MSTSBin 1.7 files left untouched. All routes open in the Route Editor and show all there is in them, terrain, tracks and objects, using either Launcher.exe -runeditor or Train.exe -toolset.
Then I did the same with the MAIN 1.7 MSTS which is listed in the Registry, replaced it's Train.exe with the Patch 1.4 one and again all in the MINI routes copy's Route Editor as well as in the MAIN one works as it should.
Some of your routes in the Registry MSTS not showing their terrain suggests that the Route Editor can not see their TILES and perhaps the Registry has been messed up ?
Can you "Export" the Registry Microsoft Games key using Start / Run regedit, call it what you like and then screen print it's top part after opening it with NOTEPAD and save it as a JPG in a graphics editor so that I can have a look at. It should look similar to the one below if you have the MAIN MSTS installed into Drive C: ! If not then it should show the drive your MSTS has been installed into from CDs ?

Otto, the CdPath points to a hard disk copy of the install disk. I use it to avoid inserting something into the cd drive, which works, but it cannot be used to install the game.

Hi Dave !
Can not see anything wrong in your MSTS Registry Key and it's paths.
The CD-Rom drive should play no part in running MSTS but to make sure of that just edit it back to the actual drive letter of it as per the Windows Explorer and then test loading some of these terrain less routes again in the Route Editor !
The CD-ROM path is the first one in the MSTS Registry key and it could be that MSTS is being confused by your unexpected "CDPath"="D:\\DISKCO~1\\MSTS\\" line and does not read the rest of the key ?
Another crazy idea is to rename your installed from CDs Train Simulator folder to MSTS so that it becomes a MSTS MINI routes copy and then run it's Editors with a Desktop Shortcut Target: Train.exe -toolset and check what the Route Editor does then ! ;-)
I am running out of ideas ! :-(

Hi folks. I'm brand new to the forum (and MSTS) and have been reading as many posts as possible during the past several days in order to set my mind at rest about MSTS installation and update issues prior to buying one of the versions of the program currently available (Atari, or Ubisoft). For that reason, this old post really caught my attention. Much of the technical details were over my head since I'm primarily a Mac user.
I intend to buy this program and various add-onsfor my nephews (ages 10-13), who, like me, also have fairly limited Windows PC experience. They would be running MSTS natively under Boot Camp on a newer Intel Mac. While their father does has more PC experience, I don't want to be buying any of them serious headaches if I can avoid it! Here then are my questions:
If I were to buy the Ubisoft version of the program--which apparently includes the 1.2 update and also lists Windows XP compatibility on the box--is there a simple, safe and reliable upgrade path to get the version up to the improvements currently being made by George with his MSTSBIN project?
Can one just download the latest official update/patch (prior to installing George's latest MSTSBIN), or is their a required sequence of patch installs that includes earlier versions. Naturally, I wanted to find out if the "wrong version of train.exe problem" discussed in this particular post was pretty much an anomaly, or else one related to the Ubisoft version of the program.
I would also prefer to avoid the necessity for keeping a CD in the drive as when running the program. Perhaps one of you train sim pro's would be willing to comment and/or direct me to a forum posting that addresses this with a little less technical detail. Thanks!

Hi Rich !
If you think that the MSTS on the CDs is version 1.2 then after installing it the date of the Train.exe in the Train Simulator folder should be 11. December 2001 and it's size must be 3997 Kb.
You can see these details by clicking on View in folders tool bars at the top and click on Details.
If not then you can download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsimulator
Then you can install the latest MSTSBin 1.7.0224 patch from the Download page here:
http://mstsbin.uktrainsim.com/eng/eng.html
read it's Readme.txt and Manual_eng.doc files and install it !

Thanks for responding, Otto! I noticed that some people refer to the update as 1.2 (1.4) in their posts. Is their some reason for that? Also, will this Microsoft 1.2 update likely change things such that the CD must remain in the drive when the program is launched?

Hi Rich !
Yes, the December 2001 Train.exe version 1.2 update is in fact the 1.4 patch and eliminates the need for a MSTS CD to be in it's drive.
