I never got around to getting the first version of MSTS, due to among other things, having a very old computer.

Also, one of the things that I noticed when this first version was announced was that the Northeast Corridor would be included. I later on found out, to my disappointment, that the NEC in this release would go only as far "northeast" as Philly :-( (i.e., the Northeast Corridor for MSTS "1" only covered the Washington-Philadelphia portion).

Now that I have a far better machine, I anticipate being able to easily handle (and hopefully enjoy) the forthcoming MSTS-X. Not only do I hope that the Acela Express will be included in the new version, but I very much hope that MSTS "2" will include a Northeast Corridor that goes ALL THE WAY TO BOSTON :-) (resulting in a fuller Washington-to-Boston Northeast Corridor).

Instead of holding your breath why not now purchase the current "old" version of MSTS and have some fun? With all the upgrades on the file library I have a feeling the ""X" version will not be much more of an upgrade than eye candy anyway.

If they use the same basic idea as the flight sim then perhaps they will model the entire surface of the US.

Before the X version is released, you may get your wish to drive at least as far as New York City from DC.

Once testing is done and signaling is complete, the entire stretch of that part of the route will be ready for beta testing. The scenery is nearly complete along that entire stretch.
