Hi,
A labour saving thought just past my way......
First off I create a brand new blank route and create a town of my liking design wise. Now I want to trans plant that town to other routes. I figure that "all" I would have to do is copy the tile files and then rename them to Tile numbers that would be in the location I want them in the new route. OK thats the BIG picture idea, but the concept must work surly given that there is plenty of room for improvement of the concept at this stage. I just like the idea of not having to recreate town after town after town.............. Come to think of it, any tiles or group of tiles could be trans planted. I suspect the only practical limitation would be interaction with the next tile and that can be avoided by having nothing crossing the tile boundry. Remember that I am only thinking of "scenary" in the creation stage of the land scape for now. Like real life, the towns came first.

In theory that appears to be a sound idea. Grab the tile with the town scenery on it from the Scenery folder under your route, and copy/paste it, renaming the new copies by the tile numbers you want the town to appear on.

Remember though that the scenery placements will retain their height values so if you have terraformed the tiles you'll need to select each element and press <J> to re-ground them correctly.

Like real life, the towns came first.

With train simulators the tracks come first and where they are supposed to go and if you are replicating a real route then imported into it terrain like we used to do with DEMEX comes first. Then you place markers for where the tracks are to go and when they are all down and trains can run on them without any mishaps then you start adding signals, interactive objects, roads and crossing, buildings, vegetation, etc.

What would be a better idea is if you could copy a clump of buildings in one route's scenario and then paste it into another one. But I don't think that stuff like that is on the current road map for RS ! ;)

Hi,
Very true Otto. Simulating real life, thats the order of things for sure.
After posting I did think HMMMMMM I am talking pre-railway days and creating a justification for a new line across virgin country. (home grown fictional railways). Another given is, no two towns are ever the same but hey, given that we all amuse ourself in different ways, whats the occasional identical town when entered from a different direction. ;-)

"Towns came first" depends on where, Dear Old Blighty was pretty much populated by the time railroads were invented, and many east coast US railroads had to go wherever there was space left over. American midwest and west, however, towns grew up around the railroads and many had no other reason for existence. City of Chicago started as a trading post, incorporated in 1834, rather quickly grew into the railroad hub of the universe due to the timing and location.

One of them "everybody knows this" deals, you are aware that you can CTRL click to select multiple buildings, then CTRL V to paste? Fastest way to make big cities, and for smaller towns after pasting the clones run around and add, delete, or replace the random building here and there to make it look like a different town.:cool:

Yo Mr Sniper, perhaps I can slide in an off topic question real quick. Since they changed the forum software my senile brain can't figure out how to post pics without the attachment/ thumbnail gizmo at the bottom. Can you clue me in, before the off topic police throw me in the slammer?

Answer at present is you can't, if I have one pic to post I add as an attachment, then view the attachment and select "copy image location", then click "insert picture" and paste the thumbnail URL in the dialog box. Best way now is;

http://photobucket.com/

or;

http://www.imageshack.us/

Photobucket is probably easiest since you can just copy the IMG format that the new forum prefers.
