Got mine the other day, me likes. If I go thru the trouble of building a route can I create a free play activity to test it or do I need to wait for the dev tools?

Heya Patrick! Yeah, the "scenario editor lite" that comes with the game works fine for free roam scenarios, don't need the dev tools except for standard scenarios or AI traffic.

Hi Sniper,
This thing looks pretty good so far, I noticed there ain't no distant mountains in this one. Climbing up Cajon seemed like Kansas with all that horizon. Is there a button somewhere for DM's or did they leave em out all together? Any word on when the tools will be out, I want to pop the hood on this beast and see what I can mutilate?

Worst trouble with this new forum, no devil icon. Haven't heard anything official, but the patch and new dev tools are rumored anywhere from Feb 1st to mid February, maybe they're holding them for a Valentine's Day present. :D No kiss smiley either. :mad:

What you actually NEED dev tools for in the European version;

Standard scenarios and AI traffic;
"Importing" new objects (we've cloned default ones by hacking with Mike Simpson's newest torture device);
Setting up "templates" for new routes that use DEM and/or markers.

For fictional routes, if you don't care about the latitude and longitude being in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles off the west coast of Africa you don't need it, and for free roam scenarios without AI traffic (AI traffic CAN be used in free roam altho you need the dev tools) the "lite" scenario editor is adequate.

I uninstalled the dev tools before installing the US version since I heard they weren't compatible, dunno what the Brit definition of "compatible" is since neither of my routes will work with the out-of-the-box US version, you need to buy the York Newcastle route separately.

Anyway, you can do some serious damage just with the tools included, might want to visit Mike and Yuri to see what to back up and get Mike's gadget for deleting and checking stuff. :cool:

Well, I decided to check out the world editor and made all kinds of weird changes. When I was done I assumed I could just bail out without saving and go on my merry way. NOT SO FAST, RS NEEDS TO SAVE THESE CHANGES. Please tell me I missed something here.

I run in windowed mode most of the time, but no, you didn't miss anything, until the patch there's no way to exit without saving changes built in. They also didn't include a built in way to delete unwanted routes or scenarios. Allegedly that's in the patch, altho I can't find any official announcement as to when, but for now you need Mike Simpson to delete anything. Also see my public service announcement, back up the scenarios.bin and scenarios folders before fiddling with the scenario editor, and make a backup copy of that unholy routes.xml file because that's the worst time bomb in the game. :eek:

Hi Sniper,
DL'd the PON, very nice. I didn't back up the files tho. Better go do that now before the kuju meltown occurs. I must say, I do like a lot of things about this sim tho, going back to MSTS is gettin harder and harder. Hopefully they'll iron out a few of these problems before too long. Another potential huge problem I see is the scenarios.bin, what could they have been thinking here. We want you to corrupt this file to render all scenarios for this entire route dead as a hammer. Here's an idea, let me have my own little file to screw up however I see fit and not tamper with anyone else's hard work.

Mini Routes idea also works here, altho it takes up quit a bit of disk space. Copy the whole enchilada to another folder, delete whatever routes you don't plan to hack, apply the electrodes to that copy to watch it jump. :eek: Not really necessary if you back up routes.xml and scenarios.bin, and you can clone a route by creating a new one and copying the contents of the original into that for evil experiments. :cool:

Sure we can have our own isolated routes but presumably we will be able to download scenarios for all routes currently available. My point was that each scenario should be confined to one file, so if a corruption should occur it won't disturb other scenarios. Ditto this sentiment for the Routes.xml, as you are fully aware corruption isn't a question of if, but when. IMO having common files is a huge mistake. :eek:

Yeah, but if we squeal loud enough, perhaps they'll rework it.
