View Full Version : Surely it won't be this easy-----

Colleagues,

As many of you know, I specialize in creating flat people. As these are very simple single polygon - well actually two polygons back to back, items and as I already had 3DC-Pro, though I had not used it much, I thought I might look at converting some of my flat people to the RailSim file format. Well, import the TSM part file and the texture comes with it. Adjust the sizing if necessary (probably will be) and then export as a RailSim format file. Then to test the thing, bail out of 3DC, go back in, and import the RS file - voila, works like a charm. Now to wait for the new DevTools to see how it might work in a real route. If it is this easy, then Mike Sinclair can probably convert all of his wondrous tree files in short order as well, if he created them with TSM.

Hm, wouldn't be nicer to just use 3D animated people, supplied in the box?

And nicer 3D vegetation too?

They get it fixed so the animated people aren't merging into monster triplets that might work, but we'd need to make custom invisible platforms that would specify different types doing different things. For example they do have some static flat people objects, but they're a collection that wouldn't fit in just any scene. Bunch of trackworkers alongside the tracks, for example.

Looks like a bunch of Zombies! And some of them are clones!!:p

Standing in the middle of the tracks too ;) atleast give them cameras!

Which is the folder for the textures of the passengers? I'd like to screw around there and create my own people.

\Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\scenery\Charac ters\textures

or

\Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorUS\Scenery\Char acters\textures

Haven't poked around with the static ones much, I only found three that are large groups like that, dunno if there are individual ones or not.

Little confusion possible here, "procedural flora" is the terrain paint that grows 3D weeds on it, but platforms that grow animated people like weeds are;

\Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\scenery\Proced ural

I suspect whatever governs which people spawn on the invisible platforms is somewhere in there. I did fiddle with adding an invisible platform in a vacant lot, but again the strange mix of characters and costumes just don't look right milling around the junk piles.

Well, import the TSM part file and the texture comes with it.

Is this to say that 3DC can import a TSM editing file, allowing one to export to KRS through 3DC?

Take care,

Well, doing it did not fragment my hard-drive??

Really, I don't know for sure until we get the DevTools item but it appears that you
can. Now granted, the end result will not be any better than the TSM item unless
some additional tweaking is done while in 3DS. Given that the figures I had were very simple, I just used them as a test - which test is only partly done until that DevTools comes out.
I have created nearly 1000 flat people, all different, and in my setting up of the Hook & Eye sim., which may be my last MSTS sim., I have them categorized into several categories by age, (children, young folks, adults), sex, etc. However, each is just a back to back polygon, and I use PaintShop/Pro-10 to create images from scans of photos (family), magazines, ads, etc. I set up 3DC to have each of the grid squares equal 1 foot, and there are 10 squares visible. I had also set up TSM in feet, rather than meters as well, so it did not appear that I would need to adjust sizes of these simple images at all.

Some may need reducing about 15% at worst. 3DC works by importing the TSM project file, so the only items you can work this way are those that you either created yourself, or those someone else allowed you to have the project file of.

Hello Jerry,

Well, doing it did not fragment my hard-drive??

It's a joke signature image.

Really, I don't know for sure until we get the DevTools item but it appears that you
can.

Then, I assume, 3DC has a TSM .dst file import? Was not aware of it.

Now granted, the end result will not be any better than the TSM item unless some additional tweaking is done while in 3DS.

Some may need reducing about 15% at worst.

Material properties, part naming, resizing and the like? Not all-out remapping, I would assume?

3DC works by importing the TSM project file, so the only items you can work this way are those that you either created yourself,

.DST files, in other words. Not a problem. I wouldn't mind exporting my GP40-2 series over to KRS (or MSTS2, considering that 3DC can import TSM models).

Take care,

-Kurt

3DC/Pro has an import plugin for TSM .dst files. The lessor versions do not, but some
MSTS functionality has been moved to the lower versions. I sprung for "Pro" about a year ago and have not used it much because I have TSM and was comfortable with it. I wish
Abaccus would come out with a version of TSM for RS and later MSTS-X, but I won't hold my breath.
