I have the latest DevDocs version (8 Feb 2008) and there is no documentation of the DEMs in there. Did it get lost from the latest version?

Hi,
you dont need the Dev Docs for DEM / SRTM
you will find the info in the Manuals........
C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\Manuals\EN\ Rail Simulator - Editor User Guide.pdf
page 14 "Terrain Extraction Tool"
Follow it to the letter and it works.

I think my copy (US version) of the Editor User Guide.pdf is defective! And I don't mean that the file is defective, I mean the document is incomplete.
The (very brief) instructions are on the bottom of page 15 and appear to be truncated.
Last line says: "Place the .hgt files into this directory: …Program Files\Rail Simulator\DEM" then the page ends with a note about availability. Next page is Scenario creation.
I think the correct folder is: .../DEM/SRTM

hi,
the complete story
Terrain Extraction Tool
This tool is only available when the object or linear object toolboxes are open and allows you to insert an area of SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data. To automatically create nine tiles of real-world terrain data underneath the camera’s current location, press T. When using this tool, you may find the camera is underground after the terrain extraction is complete.
You can obtain SRTM data from ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2 in the form of .hgt files. Place the .hgt files into this directory: ...\Program Files\Rail Simulator\DEM\SRTM\ You will need to create this folder if it is not already present.

How do you determine what files you need for the area you are going to model.I would like to try my hand at Williamson to Bluefield but have no idea what files to get.I know there must be a way to use that map but I have no clue. Thanks nwman.

HI,
find your location in google earth. that will give you the lat / long you need to be getting your SRMT files for. Later when you create any marker files make sure google earth, (or any other program) is set for decimal degrees
