This question is directed at anyone who knows Microdem. I obtained the tutorial on converting DEM data into hgt files. Everything went fine until I tried to save the file in .BIL format. The option doesn't exist in my copy of Microdem (version 10), however I see it in the tutorial as well as the help file in my copy of Microdem. Could someone please tell me what I am missing?
Thanks in advance,

Hi, if you are making terrain, look at the terrain section in the editor user guide " terrain extraction tool " follow the instructions, it works fine. then you dont have to mess with the bil files. I am a dummy when it comes to things like that, but it works for me. good luck.

I appreciate the info. I've looked in the manuals and I couldn't find anything on the terrain extraction tool. Which manual did you find this in? Thanks again for your help.

hi,
The complete manual story is on page 15 of the editor user guide, but is missing the last few words
Terrain Extraction Tool
This tool is only available when the object or linear object toolboxes are open and allows you to insert an area of SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data. To automatically create nine tiles of real-world terrain data underneath the camera’s current location, press T. When using this tool, you may find the camera is underground after the terrain extraction is complete.
You can obtain SRTM data from ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2 in the form of .hgt files. Place the .hgt files into this directory: ...\Program Files\Rail Simulator\DEM\SRTM\ You will need to create this folder if it is not already present.

follow this to the letter and it does work. yes its rather cryptic

I read that in the manual and I got it to work once, but the terrain didn't look right and right after that the program crashed. When I restarted it, the terrain was grey in color and distorted. I haven't been able to get it to work since. Perhaps it's a problem with the route blueprint? I checked this and could find nothing wrong. I used the asset editor to create the blueprint so this should be fine. I also noticed that I can't jump to a location by typing in the lat and lon into the compass at the top of the screen. It just resets to my original location. Could this be caused by the same problem?
Thanks for your help and taking time to answer my questions.
Best Regards,

Same for me... I looked for help with the same problem in another thread, and although I got some good hints, none of them worked. Even with the DevTools installed, the navigation panel still won't move the camera, and if the camera won't move, then the terrain can't be extracted... Maybe RSDL can patch the navigation panel soon.

flyingjeff and Nscale1700:
I had the same thing when first creating my route - gray and misformed terrain.
I had to run the RS editor in a window to get proper terrain textures. Once in a window I could successfully use the 'T' key and see the ground properly.
After you have placed a couple of objects, placed some track (one piece of each is probably enough) and re-formed a little bit of the terrain (like with the smooth tool), save the work you've done, close the editor and quit. Reset your options back to fullscreen and you should now be able to edit your route in fullscreen.

Hello folks,
I've been tinkering with my problem the last couple of days and here's what I found: I uninstalled the developers tools and tried creating the template blueprint with "missing bits" program. I figured maybe the two programs were conflicting with each other but this still wouldn't work. I reinstalled the developers tools and guess what? I've been generating terrain like a crazy guy!
So the moral of the story is to create your initial blueprints with the RS_Tools_TMB program, generate the blueprint with RSDev tools and follow their instructions word for word. If this doesn't work, try reinstalling the developers tools pack. Bear in mind I have the NA version of the game. I don't know if this works for the UK version.
I hope my trials and tribulations with this program will help some of you (ha, ha).

PS-Also keep in mind that one .hgt file can generate several sets of 9 tiles.
When you generate one set of tiles, creep up to the border of these tiles and press "T" again and more terrain will be generated.
