Colleagues,

I sent an E-mail to RailSim Support and in less than 36 hours got the following reply. I
have injected into it, what my questions were in (). I give them credit for answering
quickly.

(Question was how to determine actual height of track and lay track to a specific elevation. Note that RS measures height to the top of the rail, so it would be necessary to add about 1/2 meter to any measured or recorded terrain height)

1] Height can be ascertained by simply double left clicking on any point along the track. The gizmo will appear and the properties box on the right side will open. This contains X/Y/Z values. Y being based on 0 = sea level.

To adjust track to a desired height, there are many methods. The fastest I have found is to use the Terrain Level Tool set to the height you want your track at. You can then add a gradient point to your track and press L to get it to snap to the terrain. If you have very accurate height measurements you’ll need to take into account the height of the profile, as the reading of the track Y value is from the top of the rail not the base of the ballast.

(Question was - The turnouts are nice, but in the US we use specific frog numbers for
turnouts. Is there a possiblity we might have these in a future upgrade)

2] We are not too keen on fixed junctions, but we have several things in mind for future expansion in this area. As we already have fixed network sections such as turntables and traversers there is no reason why a 3rd party could not already create a set of fixed network objects that consist of junction types.

(Question was: Can we have some documentation on the specifics of something as basic as laying the track. [I looked at the videos and read the .pdf files and could find nothing except more advanced comments])

4] We are always looking at what documentation end users will benefit the most from, but where things such as track laying is concerned we have found that people understand processes much better visually than when reading text. Thus we have created a vast number of tutorial videos on many aspects of track laying. These can be found in our tutorials section on the official site, or on Blip.tv (just search for Rail Simulator).

(Question was - how can I lay track underground, like a tunnel through a mountain. If it is a short tunnel perhaps, but how about one 3000' long or so---)

5] Wire frame terrain is something we are aiming to include in Upgrade Mk2.
