What gets on my nerves is that whenever I delete files and being asked for confirmation, the monitor screen goes black, a "Continue" window appears and after accepting it the screen goes black again before restoring what was displayed to start with.
It does that on other occasions too.

Paul1953,
I've seen similar videos regarding other products, but these done by Microsofties themselves. No, I can't give you the links offhand.
Great job!
But how do you come up with all these fascinating links, Paul? Do they come from the Canadian National Film Board? (Which I love, by the way.)
(And didn't I ask you to stop leering?)

Yes, that's how I feel about and use it for the Internet only, having had to get a new cheap dual core CPU computer, the previous Internet WIN-98SE computer expiring.
But my SIMS are running on a WIN-XP SP2 Core 2 Duo E6700 computer, no Internet and my Accounts software and programming on another one.
Got 2 WIN-XP OEM CDs and will not stop using it as long as there is hardware supporting it ! ;)

I really don't know what the issue is with your system Otto.Ive never seen anything remotely similar to that when I delete files. As a matter of fact,I really don't have any real problems with Vista.

Really don't know what could be a reason for that.Sean,Are you in the US?The only thing I could take a guess at would be a bug in the euro version of Vista as far as Otto is concerned.Ive got the US Vista home premium and have no screen stutter at all when deleting files.

Sounds like an upgrade or imaported data disk that does not have the security permissions changed. Are these files in your My Documents folder or somewhere else on your hard drive (or another drive)?
To update the security permissions open the folder properites (Do NOT do this in the root of Windows or Program Files).
Click on the Security Tab. You should see "Authenticated Users" having Full Control. If not then it is the security permissions not being set correctly from importing incorrectly.
To fix this click on the "Advanced" (not "Edit" on properties).
This opens the "Advanced Secuirty Settings - Permission" - now click on "Edit" and select "Authenticated Users" - "Full Control".
Check the "Replace all exisiting inhertiable..." and then OK
One this is if this was not a goodf import then the "owner" may also be messed up. In that case you will have to take ownership BEFORE reseting the secuirty. Owner is also in the "Advanced Secuirty Settings" but is under the "Owner" tab. If the owner shows a bunch of letters and number then is you need to "Edit" and "Change owner to" and check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".

The VISTA Home Premium screen goes black twice during deleting files and it does not matter on which logical drive partition or in which folder they are.
I right-click on a file and select Delete and up come the "Are you sure" followed by "Continue" prompts and accepting the latter the screen goes black.
Then a "User Account Control" window appears, "Windows needs your permission to continue".
O.K. that and the screen goes black again followed by another screen showing the deletion process.

Ok, you've stated that the UAC prompts already. What do your permissions for the folder say?

vLite does not fix the issue - only masks it by disabling the UAC (just like removing the battery in the carbon monoxide detector because it keeps going off when the furnace kicks in.) Check the permissions on your data folders - I will bet they are not set correctly.

That be your problem. :) "Authenticated Users" and "Users" need to be set to Full Control for permissions.
First check that tab that says "Owner" and make sure it says your account name and not something like S-1234-1-185... If it has the numbers then you need to "Edit" and "Change owner to" and check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
Once/If that is straight on the screen you posted do the "Edit" and select "Authenticated Users" - "Full Control" and "Users" - "Full Control". Check the "Replace all exisiting inhertiable..." and then OK
PS. Sorry if I sounded rude before - getting tired of hearing complaining about Vista by those that profess to be IT professionals but yet do not want to learn or work the issue out.
Back in XP days one would not notice this issue even though the setting were messed up because if one was an administrator they had full admin right all the time. Now we get the UAC when something kicks over to want admin right as in the case when deleting a file or moving it (which internally is a copy & delete original). I never realized this may be the #3 reason why people get the UAC and complain (#1 is crappy third-party programming, #2 is “tinkering” with the system setting to “tweak the system”)
Microsoft probably did not think users placing their data outside the "My Document". In all fairness I did not think of this until now since when I have setup others with Vista I have always checked this. Nothing in the Microsoft upgrade or even new computer install will prompt about this. What would fix it is a nice utility that would ask where your data is and allow multiple locations - then check it and fix it instead of having the user do the steps above. Too many of us “older types” still think in the day of single hard drive with one data location – except now one can go to Best Buy, get an external hard drive or two and plug them in and go.

Thanks, Matt, I shall give that a try later ! ;)
Not many of us are professional IT people and even some of them are having difficulties making VISTA do what they want it to, which is evident after reading millions of posts after doing a GOOGLE for VISTA +problem !
I am just a retired DOS and WINDOWS to WIN-98SE programmer of commercial Accounting Software, all of it still working in WIN-XP, but VISTA is causing many to tear their hair out and mine is getting thinner too, despite not doing much with VISTA ! :(
Forinstance the Favorites option I use to link to frequently used drive partitions and their folders listed in them has disappeared from Folder displays tool bars and shall have to put shortcuts for them on the VISTA desktop, but have to exit the VISTA Explorer folder displays first before I can use them and keep repeating that to open another frequently used drive/folder ! Call that Efficiency ?

Glad I could help and holpfully this will help others with the same issue
We need a sub-fourm here for PC Tech for questions about getting the help out to others that are not related to the sim, but are part of the sim enjoyment. This setting on Vista definately would be a sticky.

mttcrlsn,
I moderate exactly such a forum on FlightSim.com -- "PC Software and Data Maintenance". The more people who come over and use that forum, the more useful it becomes to all.
Later this weekend I will copy the contents of this thread to that forum and sticky it just as you suggested.

Now if we could just get Vista to run DOS batch file loading? I have tried running in 98 compatability, and no luck. Had the same problem with the ATFS routes by Bob Wirth, and the Hook_Eye route? I guess I will have to load the routes onto my wifes computer, get them fully configured, save to a CD and reload onto my computer. Now that is efficient computing at its best.

Hi Bob !
I have no problems running BATCH.BAT files on my VISTA Home Premium Internet only computer, providing that their contents are syntax correct and can find what they are supposed to process !
Mind you, I have given all my drive partitions Properties / Security settings Full Control, including drive C:

So basicly you have FAT32 partitions now and UAC is disable (even if the button says otherwise). :(
The only folders on the OS drive one should mess with the security are any "My Documents" type folders.

Except how may Train-simers back up to that level (example all the PC hardware and other questions that land in the General and other fourms here.) Nels has already been thinking about something like this for Train-sim too.

Hi Matt,
"Right-click "Run as administator""
I should have said, in addition to running as administrator, I was also running in compatability mode. The program runs, but does not collect all the files? If I run on wifes XP machine, the batch program collects all the files in Bob Wirth's routes?

So basically you have FAT32 partitions now and UAC is disabled (even if the button says otherwise).
All my VISTA drive partitions are NTFS and UAC is not disabled, it's purpose being to prevent others from modifying anything without permission !
The only folders on the OS drive one should mess with the security are any "My Documents" type folders.
I prefer to be in charge of my computers and do what is necessary, like checking all these folders after Internet sessions and clear out all rubbish dumped into them by web sites, as well as having the IExplorer Tools / Internet Options delete all temporary files.
Some of these folders report Access is denied, but doing this DIR /A at their folders Command Prompt will show you where their contents have been flagged to with <Junction> so that they can be modified ! ;)
http://www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/pics/vista-desktop-folders.jpg (http://www.otto-wipfel.co.uk)
You'd be surprised how much of this rubbish is stored by some on their computers, had former computing clients and friends of mine ask for help, their hard drives getting clogged up and found tens of thousands of such files on their drive C: !

After unzipping the attached, COPY/PASTE the INSTALLME-CHECK.BAT into the route's folder you want to run an Installme.bat in and then run my INSTALLME-CHECK.BAT !
It will run your Installme.bat and pipe all of what the executing Batch file displays on screen into a Text file and open it with WORDPAD.
The VISTA WORDPAD.EXE having been installed into a different to WIN-XP folder, run it and load the folder's Install.txt into it.
Browsing it's contents you can then see what has not been copied and why not ! ;)
Could well be that it has lines with incorrect Syntax which do not do what they are supposed to ! The Path prefixes could be working different in VISTA than in WIN-XP ?
Attach your zipped Installme.bat to a reply so that we can check it out !
Am going to install MSTS into my VISTA computer again so that I can use it to check such problems ! ;)

The problem was not that his 2 Batch files could not be run, it was them not doing all the copying they were supposed to do.
What was wrong with them ?
Nothing, running them on my VISTA computer, the drive partition I have MSTS installed into having been given Full Control to all User Groups !
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/attachment.php?attachmentid=2610&stc=1&d=1206284737
It does not matter whether "copy from and to paths" are enclosed in " ......... " quotes, providing there are no spaces in drive, folder and file names. Enclosing paths with quotes which have no spaces in them causes no problems.
Have now made some syntax changes, capitalizing all it's Batch commands, replacing call xcopy with XCOPY and look forward to Bob reporting that they now also work on his VISTA computer.
It seems that with all WIN O/S one can not be sure that executables of all sorts run the same in all of them.
Still waiting for another member to e-mail me his zipped activities *.apk files so that I can convert them to a zipped package for installing on VISTA computers, not requiring TSUnpack, but nevertheless should work using the TSUnpack.exe, which does it's job on my VISTA computer !

P.S.: Forgot to mention the there are some default shapes which have no *.sd files, like the US1Cathedral.s and others, as well as some *.sd files which have no *.s files !

Right-click and do properties on the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator" folder.
This will not bust the default security setting of the core Windows install which amony other things is known to cause issues with updates if the defaults are changed.
