Having set VISTA updates to MANUAL and getting them almost every day, I downloaded it's 63Mb SP1 update today.

Taking ages downloading and after asking to restart VISTA took another long time to update whatever.

During this update I noticed the USB Broadband modem indicating that occasional data transfers were being processed by it. For what purpose ?

Microsoft being able do download updates to my VISTA computer, execute whatever installs these updates, on one occasion re-booting my computer without asking and no doubt updating the VISTA Registry too, makes me wonder.

If they can do that then so can seasoned hackers, unless there is something in the VISTA source code which will allow only Microsoft to do that, being given an encrypted code to start such a process.

But then I thought, what if a malicious or seriously flawed update is being released, it could wipe out all VISTA computers installing it before the alarm is being raised !

Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up just thinking about it !

Anyway, here is what it does, no great step for VISTA users ! :(

Most business users don't want VISTA and this has forced Microsoft to do this:

I am not going to use VISTA for anything other than to connect to the Internet, it's security said to be better than before, but that is being disputed my many too !

LOL,

This is interesting seeing that the 32 bit version of Vista SP1 is 434.5 MB in size and the 64 bit version is 726.5 MB. It took me approximately 7-10 minutes to download SP1 with a cable connection and installation was completely trouble free on my machines. Just like with the release candidates from last year no problems with Vista SP1 on a clean OS install with the latest drivers.

Forgive me but I'm not exactly certain what this thread is about. Vista security issues? Service Pack 1? Both? None? ??? Profit?

Have you checked the URL links in my opening message ?

This and my other "Annoyances" thread is about VISTA being one of the most flawed Microsoft operating systems to date, doing everything more convoluted, it's bloatware running slower than WIN-XP, requiring almost daily patches for it's system and security programs and is the reasons why it has been rejected by most business users and corporations.

It may have advantages for gamers and multi-media fans, providing they have up-to-date hardware and drivers to get the best out of it, DX-X (10) games versions still being thin on the ground, having to be purchased again for use under VISTA and DX-X, graphics cards for the latter having been installed !

In case you missed looking at this before, here again is what most users of it think !

I do not remember having to update WIN-XP with daily patches immediately after it's first release in 2001 and since then had many years of happy with it users, the 64-bit version having been released in 2003, M$ now having issued only it's third update with SP-3 after all these years, no doubt dealing mainly with Internet security, there not being much else wrong with it ! ;)

Otto,

All this might help explain why there has already been so much buzz over Windows 7 increasingly over the last six months.

I think even Microsoft realizes it has another "Milennium Edition" on its hands with Vista.

Just the usual "this new OS sucks" drivel that comes up every time MS releases a new Windows version. Nothing new.

Ah, I think even Microsoft knows they have have a bloatware monster. Here's a comment on Windows 7 about remarks from a recent Microsoft conference speaker:

"Things Are Being Built Again From the Ground Up. It's comical to hear the speaker admitting how bloated Vista actually is. But we do get to see how Microsoft is finally investigating the possibility of starting over from scratch and really examining how much 'stuff' Windows needs to be worthwhile..."

But that "Drivel" refers to actual problems, you can read about in replies to a GOOGLE for VISTA +problems, nudging 5 million today, growing in numbers daily, you can ignore if you wish, but would advice all others to take head of ! :(

I was able to solve a number of problems with my Home Premium version after learning how others found work arounds, like forinstance being able to access folders which report Access is denied when trying to open them ! ;)

Never had that many before, WIN-ME being second worst with over 1 million problem reports.

Where does that “drivel” come from? For the most part from users that don’t even know how to properly install an OS. Many users problems are self inflected by not having up to date drivers or installing a service pack over an already hosed operating system.

This is nothing new, the same thing happened when XP SP1 and SP2 were released.

I’m running DirectX 8, 9 and 10 games on my Vista Ultimate (32 Bit and 64 Bit) systems without any problems. Currently I’m working out of town and using a laptop that has an Nvidia 7950GTX and Core 2 CPU which is not DirectX 10 compatible. I’m running Vista Ultimate 32 Bit with SP1 installed and it’s running terrific.

None of the games I have tried or any of my photo editing software has given me any problems with SP1.
