Hi guys. I'm using Derek's ENGMOD to alter my rolling stock's 'break' values. I did this once before, editing ALL of the files with no issues at all. I'm trying this once again, and same as last, I'm editing all of the files. When I try to write the file, I get probably 1000 "Error 70.......... read-only........" error messages. I tried editing the attributes of the TRAINSET folder, by unchecking the 'read-only' box. (The box isn't even checked, it's filled by a green square.) So, the attributes are changed succesfully. I then check the properties/attributes of my TRAINSET folder to confirm that the 'read-only' option has been reset. However, upon reopening the file, the box I just unchecked is checked (with the green square) again. I've tried this MANY times, I've also tried altering the CONTENTS of the trainset folder, but I have the same problem.

Does anybody know how to fix this? I did a search on Train-Sim and Microsoft Help & Support but came up with no results.

Thanks.

Vista?? (XP can do this too but is rare.) Sounds like a security issue (See "Visita Annoyances (http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?t=269002)" thread) could be the cause. Right-click and do properties on the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator" folder. Click on the Security Tab. You should see "Authenticated Users" having Full Control. If not then it is the security permissions not being set correctly from importing incorrectly.

To fix this click on the "Advanced" (not "Edit" on properties).

This opens the "Advanced Secuirty Settings - Permission" - now click on "Edit" and select "Authenticated Users" - "Full Control".

Check the "Replace all exisiting inhertiable..." and then OK

Hi Jordan !

Do a Start / Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt and this window will appear on your desktop:

http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/attachment.php?attachmentid=2623&stc=1&d=1206317764

You may have to type CD\ and press Enter to get to the C:\ root command prompt.

Then typing ATTRIB *.* -R /S and pressing Enter will start the process of making all files on drive C: Read/Write.

It will report that hidden and system files have not been updated.

You should have no problems after that, unless something on your computer has made them all Read Only again !

Otto sounds like TrainMan_112 already reset the read-only attribute. So th next things to double check that you do have rights to the eng file (Full-control) which you should alreadr (First rule of troubleshooting is never assume what "should-be".) So one the real-only is not set and you have full-control the only other items that comes to mind is that the file locked by a program. TrainMan_112 can you open the eng file in notepad and save it?

Yes I can Matt. I'm the "Admin" of this computer, i.e the only one using it.

Tried Otto's method, no luck. Matt, how would I go about changing my settings to "full control" on XP?

Perhaps you should send Derek a PM and tell him about this problem and include a URL to this thread ?

Don't think it's Derek's program, Otto. I successfully preformed the same operation on a different computer. It's got to be something with my computer.

Don't think it's Derek's program.

You said this in your opening post:
I'm using Derek's ENGMOD to alter my rolling stock's 'break' values.

and yes, ENGMOD is Derek's creation !

Perhaps he had to deal with similar before and might have a solution ?

Sorry, Otto, let me rephrase that. I mean that it's not Derek's program that's causing the problem. I just need to find out from Matt how to set permission and control. If I still have no luck after that, I'll talk to Derek.

I CAN reset the 'read-only' attribute on any file, but something is changing it back.

You CANNOT change the state of the read-only attribute for a Windows FOLDER.

This is by design, the read-only attribute for the folder is used by the Windows OS for other purposes, it DOES NOT make the folder or any of its files read-only. It has NOTHING to do with folder permissions or group policies.

When you try to change the read-only attribute for a folder you will get a message asking whether you want to apply that setting to all files and sub-folders. If you answer yes that setting will be applied to all files and to all files in sub-folders. But, the read-only state of that folder and any sub-folder will never change.

I just need to find out from Matt how to set permission and control.

Being the only user on my WIN-XP computer I have set it up so that I do not have to log in and can not see how I can set "Permission" or "Control" in any of it's drive partitions. I can do whatever I like everywhere. KISS - "keep it simple stupid" ! ;)

I CAN reset the 'read-only' attribute on any file, but something is changing it back.

I would suggest that there is something running in the background which does that ?

I checked the properties of an actual FILE in the TAINSET folder. It IS NOT read-only. So, what's the problem with ENGMOD then?

Well, I CAN edit the value sucessfully manually. So, it has to be ENGMOD. Anyone else have any ideas? I can't even continue the runs I'm on now, because many of the cars are breaking on switches.

Like I said before, talk to Derek ! ;)

Or use the Donationware ROUTE RITER which has all the rolling stock files editing options you may need ! ;)

Well, like I said, some (most) files will write properly, but some will not. If I try to select a group and I accidentally run into one of these files that WON'T write properly, I get an error message for EVERY file, even if it was written correctly, which turns out to be about 125890123590812590812 and has me holding down 'Enter' for 5 minutes. I tried everything, using the command prompt to reset to read/write, and using RouteRiter to reset all MSTS files to read/write. So the error message stating that files are read-only is obviously not true.
