Hello:
I thought I'd put this out here, because I really want to see this happen. So much I'm willing to back off on my own programming pride to say two or more heads are better than one.
As some of you are aware I've had a concept for some time (since 2006) called RTS as shown in my tag line. I was going to wait and see what simulators on the horizon brought forward, but honestly I have my doubts that any of these simulators will be 100% compatible of what I would like to see in my vision.
My programming accomplishments are fairly small. I went to school over a decade ago and graduated from Business Administration - Information Systems. The biggest languages taught were Basic, COBOL, and dBaseIV. Basic and assembly I already mastered in the Commodore 64 days, but COBOL and dBaseIV though I became quite good were limited to business applications. Visual Basic was just introduced so I started to tinker with that since I was very comfortable with Basic already.
Right now I have 2 possible languages to develop in and that is Visual Basic (version 4 I believe - I know it's old) and XBasic. Both programs though powerfull like doing things their own way especially with file management. I would like to be able to interface first with Train Dispatcher 3, but it requires comma delimited files. There is no simple function of reading or writing in both of these languages as they perfer to use their own method of storing data.
Once I get beyond that and can get trains to self dispatch (true artificial AI) I was hoping that either the new simulators coming out can handle the interaction, or I'd be far enough along at attempting a simulator (yes even if it is 2d). One such 2d simulator Freight Yard Manager has a strong following. Since FYM has no interest in my RTS I'm alone in this venture.
Basically I'm not looking to make or spend money at this project at this time. It is my intention to keep the client programs free to the public. If I'm going to charge anything it will be for the server program RTS. Since I'll probably have the only server for some time until I'm confident it will run non-stop 24/7/365 then of course there is little money in this for me - and that is fine.
If anyone is interested or can perhaps offer some suggestions feel free to reply here, or post a message at my yahoo group listed below. I sincerely hope that one day we can have something like VatSim is for the FS community and truly have a virtual railroad world.
Thanks
Sean
