I'd like to make a series of scenarios centered around Barstow yard, one work order leading to the next.

Should I make them free roam scenarios or standard? And why?

Thanks for any help.

Hiya,

Free Roam Scenarios are the equivilant of Explore mode in MSTS. You cannot setup AI and the player can change all junctions throughout the route.

Standard Scenarios are your normal mission mode. You can setup AI, instructions and assign a train to the player.

To make scenarios you will need to download the RSDevTools available from www.railsimulator.com

These provide a developer edition (railsimeditor.exe) of Rail Simulator along side the standard railsim.exe. This adds all the additional functionality to the Scenario Editor, required to make full task based scenarios.

Yes, you can have AI trains running in Free Roam scenarios.

Create a service anywhere, set a destination for it with a Portal, give it a start time of not earlier than the scenario's and when it's time comes it will start rolling and disappear when it has reached it's destination. ;)

Don't ask me how it knows it's path, none showing in the #9 map, but it works !

Have not yet tested it in the CAJON-OTTO freight services Free Roam route, but think Jim Ward is saying that player services can not share the AI path while it is running, although I managed to do that in a test route a while ago.

P.S.: That got me started, experimenting with an example of what can be done with AI trains in a Free Roam scenario. ;)

Hi Otto,

Your information is only relevant to users who have the RSDevTools installed as all the above is not possible in a Standard copy of Rail Simulator.

It must also be taken into account that such actions to create moving AI in Free Roam based scenarios is attempting functionality that is not supported by Rail Simulator, and thus you can come into far more AI related issues undertaking such actions than if you were to use the official and intended methods via Standard Scenarios.

I thought that it has to be installed for working on existing or new scenarios ?

Can I suggest that you download this and check out it's Johansburg scenario to see what can be done with AI trains in Free Roam scenarios, this route having none other ! ;)

An installed copy of the US versions of RS is required.

Some of my experiments have shown that the player can share an AI path in a Free Roam scenario either before or behind the AI loco, the player loco following the AI loco coupling on to it to either pull or push it, as has been reported by me before ! ;)

That was done before the #1 update, the AI now evaporating at it's set destination ! ;)
