Not a bad comparison, although they used a computer that is speced for Vista. I wonder what the results would be on an older hyperthreaded P4 with one gig and a DirectX 9 video card. Obviously, in order to get those results from Vista, you would have to buy a whole new system - which was the argument against Vista in the first place!

That's a good point, Robert. I lost about 25% of my frame rates in MSTS, due to the Vista upgrade If you want performance with Vista, you have to have new components.

What would a computer “speced for Vista” be? Any of the processors with enough RAM from the last two years will run Vista fine if it’s installed properly. I have a laptop that I would consider low spec compared to my desktop configurations; the hardware is around two year old technology. I’ve had fresh installs of XP/SP3 and Vista/SP1 and don’t see any difference in performance anymore between the two.
If you want the best performance from older or weaker hardware I would suggest Linux.

That would be a computer with more than "an older hyperthreaded P4 with one gig and a DirectX 9 video card."

Why?
Linux with that hardware would perform great, most likely even better than Windows XP. Just don’t expect to do much gaming which is what the review was about to begin with, gaming performance, Vista vs. XP.
Gaming is usually entertainment that goes along with computer hardware enthusiasts who keep up with hardware upgrades. I don’t know any serious gamers that are still using hyper-threaded P4’s and less than two gigabytes of RAM anymore.

Im not sure i beleive that article...........I have beched my setup with XP-SP3 and VISTA 64 SP1 and the Benchmarks were quite far apart with XP being the winner of course.......and I Still run Vista because the performance drop is insignificant with the power of computer i have............whats a drop from a 20000 3DMARK to an 18000......no big loss for me

If you head over to GURU3D.com and find the latest driver for your video card..........you will more than likely get those FPS back........the drivers on that site are not official however they work much better than the ones you can get from the card manufacturers web sites!

Not here, I just put another machine together, dual boot with two RAID 0 arrays, one with XP/SP3 and one with Vista Ultimate 64/SP1.
With the latest drivers (Nvidia 8800 Ultra with the new 175.16’s), latest DirectX (March 08) on fresh OS installs with service packs I’m not seeing any difference. Vista Ultimate 64 is running so well that it’s becoming my OS of choice, I even have Aero enabled.

I had a dual boot with XP and Vista 32bit but I recently got rid of XP ( I could count on one hand the number of times I used in more than a year ) and now have Vista 32 and 64bit with 8GB ram ( it was cheap ) and Vista 64bit is noticeably snappier than 32bit. I may get rid to 32 bit soon seeing it only sees 2GB out of 8GB ram when remap memory is turned on in the bios but I am in no hurry to do so.
The only problem I have had with 64bit was with my TV card which I just replaced for one that works works with 64bit and 4+ Gb ram ( a lot of them seem to have this problem apparently ).
Unlike what you read in the media and internet I have had few problems with Vista since its release and I didnt like going back to XP so getting rid of it didn't bother me.
