To change the volume of your rail cars louder C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorUS\Audio\RailVe hicles\Wagons and open the PROXYXML file of each type of frieght (Cement, Coal, Frieght) and once you open it find this section
<kLoud-cRandomSampleSound d:id="15999776">
<Name d:type="cDeltaString">Wagon Loops</Name>
<IsLooped d:type="bool">1</IsLooped>
<Priority d:type="sUInt32">50</Priority>
<BaseVolume d:type="sFloat32">0.500000</BaseVolume>
<VolumeVariation
and change the section BaseVolume to whatever fits your ears. Ive only went up to 0.500000
which the default is way lower than that. I also used default sound from the MSTS sound folder and replace the wagon_rumble files with ones from MSTS and now they sound great or at least a lot better than the default quietness of RS.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if this could be done! :)

I didnt listen to the default sound too much once I turned the volume up but if you know how to play with sound files then you can throw your own in there and crank the volume up. I also changed it to where each car plays only two wagon_rumble files instead of all four, this randomizes the sounds so each car doesnt sound alike. Like I said the default sound even turned up louder may not do much better. If Bill Gates would let me use four of his wagon sounds Id put something together for everyone :)
Right now Im working on randomizing radio chatter since I havent gotten around to see if I can add it directly to the cab itself. This way when you hit certain parts of the route at certain times of day youll hear different radio chatter.

I have been wondering for a long time how to do that, like forinstance replacing some of the feeble RS US diesel and UK locos horn sounds with better ones like used by MSTS locos and replace the tracks one-type tracks sounds with better ones like those from RAILWAVES !
I can not find a program which lets me listen to the RS *.dav files nor one which can convert *.wav files to *.dav ones.
Tried Goldwave but the sounds it plays, treating the *.dav files as *.raw ones, are distorted.

Hi Otto,
There is a DAV decoder on uktrainsim (file 18204) which converts DAV to WAV so that you can listen to them.
I also believe the BIN converter in the library here allows you to play DAV files, but I can not get it to work at all on my PC, so can not confirm that.

Hi OTTO.
Heres the link to the dav to wav converter http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=223&t=78992
It was setup to only convert to wav but as he explains to convert back to dav you simply type the .dav extension onto the file when converting back. He explains better. There is also Bin Convert in the file library but it will only convert to wav and doesnt support converting back to the dav format. So far the DavDecoder from UKtrainsim has worked like a charm. Ive replaced most of my default sounds with ones from MSTS. I hope that helps.

This is what i got finished in about 10 minutes! Im working on three or four other things at the moment so I havent gotten to perfect the sounds but this is definitely a start. The sounds are louder and I may raise the volume but I think it sounds fine. Ill tinker with the sounds a bit more and see what I come up with.

Thanks for the link, James, but find that after converting the *.dav files to *.wav they don't sound real, especially not the diesel horns, most of which don't sound like the real ones when sounding them running in scenarios, like the 125 Intercity HST forinstance.
I also can not see any Rail Joint sounds files, their folders being empty.
Your sound sample videos on YouTube are brilliant, sound is realistic including tracks joint sounds and are more fun to watch than actually playing RS ! ;)
I think I shall leave you to perfect them even more and am looking forward to their amended by you files being available in the KRS section of our File Library ! :)
Take care, O t t o.

Hmm well make sure youre saving your wavs at 44100 khz or 16bit stereo then your horn shouldnt lose any quality between converts. The wagons files have to saved at a mono and at a lower sample rate (22050 or 11025) because when I try this it crashes the system. Id like to convert that horn for you and see if I can make a difference for you OTTO if you dont want to fool with it yourself.
As for the rail joint files all there is (as far as Ive found) is the wagon_squeaks and the wagon_hits those are just the random dings and pings you hear which arent very good in my opinion. Ive changed these also but have having problems with the squeaks files because I have to fit the sound file in a very small file size or I crash the game. On the other hand if I cut the sound quality to make a smaller file then the squeak sounds are high pitched in the game :(

Hi James !
I found that the BIN file converter from our File Library, once set up to associate with whatever, I am using the IRFANVIEWER to play *.wav files, then plays the sounds as good as they were meant to be. ;)
But the track joint sounds seem to be hard-coded and should sound like when the wheels of twin-axled bogies go over them, you seem to have managed in some of your sound test videos.

The only wagon sounds Ive messed with are the ones I mentioned above. I also changed the default coupling and uncoupling sound in RS to those from MSTS. If anyone is interested in how to change them for yourself you first need to convert your wav file from MSTS to dav. In my case I used x_uncouple_auto3 and x_couple_auto2 in the default sound folder in TS after I convert them to dav navigate to C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorUS\Audio\RailNe twork\Coupling and just simply rename them to T_Couple and T_DeCouple and enjoy the new sound. I have a sample video of my coupling sound in action.

Another great modification, James ! :D
I am sure that you would not get yourself into trouble releasing these sound modifications, using MSTS sounds. I think that many of the MSTS Payware add-ons also use or link to them, having renamed some for their own use ?
In any case could do the same and put them on my web site, like I did with Tom Boswell weather improvements.

Ok. Ill put something together using those two coupling sounds and add it to the download section of TS.com? I dont want to step on anyones toes, which sometimes is hard to do :) or if you would like to host the modification you can or I guess I could put them up on filefront but Id taher just put them in the file library since thats where many look in the first place.

You can actually use .wav file format for the sound files.
In the .proxyxml file (eventually to be converted to .proxybin) where you have the <filename...> line, just use 'filename.wav' instead of 'filename.dav'. There is no need to convert your .wav file into .dav format, RailSim plays .wav files just fine as long as that .wav filename is given in the .proxyxml file.
Example: from 'Class ES44 Horn.proxyxml'
<Filename d:type="cDeltaString">Kuju\RailSimulatorUS\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\ES4 4\Cab\T_ES44_HW_HornLoop.wav</Filename>
And of course the 'T_ES44_HW_HornLoop.wav' file has to be in the folder along with the 'Class ES44 Horn.proxybin' file that specifies it.

You can actually use .wav file format for the sound files.
That's assuming of course that the user actually has the required *.wav files.
I think I shall stick to converted *.wav to *.dav files ! ;)

This download does NOT include the sound files, just the PROXY files needed to make the sounds louder. This is for the US version and I will do the same for UK version. If you have any addons by MLT they come with welded sounds located in MLT_REQUIRED in your MSTS train set. I have included two exe's, one is for .wav and one for.dav extension so youll be able to rename your welded.wav and rename it to R_FX_Rail.wav and your all set. Further instuctions are included in the read me.

Here's the link to the coupling and uncoupling replacement sounds.
Installed, but should their <BaseVolume lines also need to be increased to 16.000000 ?
O t t o
P.S.: Got the "Welded" download. Thanks !
I think that when all of the sound improvements have been checked and tested, I might RS_Tools_TMB package their Assets and upload them to my web site !

Ok, heres the download for the UK version of RS. Like the US I just changed the volume. Anyone planning to use this file please note that you can use any welded sound you want, its just that I used MLTs in particular and so Im going on that since I havent tested or have any other sounds.

Hi,
Well if you seen the video I made of the coupling in action then Id say they sound loud enough. I think the default is set to 0.500000 they sounded fine to me so I didnt change them.

This changes the default wagon sounds for US route in Rail Simulator. Nothing you have to do but backup original and install mine.
I also made a different splash screen while loading the Cajon Pass its available for download also.

Hi James !
Got my Points Sounds working and sounding good watching AI trains go by, but inside the cab they are too frequent.
Check them out hare: www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/rs/rs-sounds.zip after you have made a BACK-UP of your RailSimulatorUS folder.
Increasing the coupler sounds to 16.000000 seems to have made no difference, but the first time you uncouple anything in the F3 monitor, there is no uncoupling sound.

In my video I uncoupled while having F3 opened. I tried the same with your files I downloaded and I had sound when uncoupling with F3 open.
Increasing the sound to 16.000000 didnt seem to increase the volume for the coupling action. couldnt hear your welded sounds inside the cab but what I did notice was your sound was only two seconds which would explain why they sound so frequent. The sound I use is 30 seconds so it loops after thirty second, not every two seconds. Maybe trying a sound thats a little longer would help? Ill play with it some more and see what I can come up with :)

I dont get coupling sound from inside the can but I dont know if youre suppose to. Of course the video I made was from outside. I made a sound file that is 20 seconds and is like your file but I added some low squeaks to make it a little more random. You may like it but as far as your sound being too frequent thats what it is because when I finally heard the sound it was repeating over and over "click clack, click clack" this sound is a welded sound and hopefully a little more random. The coupler issue I havent noticed unless Im missing something. My couple and uncouple sounds play fine with or without F3 open (from outside)
