View Full Version : Assets Editor Not Working

I have reported this a few times in the past and so far have not had an explanation !
Trying to run it with Start/Programs/RS Dev Tools/Tools I get this response: Unable to initialise graphics
This is the command line switch used by the RailSimEditor.exe: start_up_mode=depot.
Everything else of RS works and so do all 3rd-party utilities for it.
I am using a display of 1024x768 and Multisampling=4 with a Radeon X1950XT Pro and a 19" ViewSonic TFT monitor.
I have tried various Options settings and re-installing RS but to no avail !
Is there anybody using the same graphics card and monitor who can run the RS Assets Editor and can tell me what Options settings make that possible ?

Again, exactly the same as you Otto? I presume you are running it in "windowed" mode with that screen res?

I can't set it to "Windowed" mode either, getting Unsupported resolution or multisampling options.
Tried various settings and none did work.
Would help to know which resolution / multisampling combinations do work with a Radeon X1950XT / 19" ViewSonic TFT monitor ! ;)

What size do you run your Desktop at then Otto?? Mine runs at 1280x1024, so RS allows me 1024x768 as my maximum window size.

i had an error with this one due to the fact i was running 1920 x 1200 FS , the fix was just firing up RS, changing the resolution down to 1440 x 800? windowed and it seemed fine? (I didnt have to touch the multisampling)
but that was with a 24" Samsung LCD, 2x EVGA 8800GTX
so it might have something to do with your desktop resolution?

Finally cracked it ! ;)
Setting the RS Options display parameters to less than the monitors desktop display resolution allows RS to run in windowed mode and the Assets Editor opens, showing the Blueprints editor window with a sort of scenario editor window in the background.
Why did the Asset Editor error message not say that the RS options have to be set to windowed mode and why did the RS Options error message not say that to run it in windowed mode a lesser than the desktop resolution has to be selected !
Now all I got to figure is how to select and open files to work with, the available options and folders not showing much to choose from !

Hi Otto,
The Asset Editor will only open files in the Rail Simulator\Source folder and its sub-folders. If you wish to experiment, download the Example Assets from the Rail Simulator Downloads site.

Thanks, Mike !
What a bloatware nightmare ! Downloaded the MileSpeed.zip and although they are all showing in the Source\Kuju....... folders, clicking on most files produces nothing !
I was hoping to be able to view what objects look like with the RS Shape Viewer.
I don't think I want to get involved in working at this level of RS and lose my sanity in the process !

Having said that, curiosity got the better of me and I had another go, this time with the downloaded Coupling assets ! ;)
Looking for some documentation, the DevTools docs not saying much on the subjects, I had a look in the Official Content/RsDevTools section and find that the featured in it 0.03 Quick Start Guide refers to the Rail Simulator. :o
Is there more detailed documentation anywhere on how to use the Assets / Blueprints editor ?
Trying to view objects, I found only a few which provide a Preview option.
To view it in the hidden in the background Rail Simulator window, it can not be brought forward by simply clicking on what is showing of it and the Blueprint Editor window has to be pulled down or minimized to view all of it.
Well, it's a start to just view some of the downloaded Couplings objects and learn what their files are called, but trying to copy all the KUJU assets into the Source\Kuju folder does not let me access any of them.
Viewing RS ACE files with the TGATool2A-Aceit program, many of them show a horizontally striped background, RS obviously uses differently to MSTS shape.s files and can't find Alpha Channels being used by any of them.
Having to set the RS Options to use windowed mode in order to use the Assets Editor is a real pain, not being able to exit the Options back to the Desktop after having changed and saved them, being forced to load RS first before being able to exit and then having to change them back to fullscreen again for running RS scenarios ! :(
If I were a developer of routes and assets for RS I'd say "Forget it", taking a Russian loco developer 5 months to half-finish creating just one object !
Mike, how about a new function in the RS_Tools_TMB.exe to make it easier to at least "RS Shape Viewer" display RS viewable objects files, filtered into a selection list when looking at the RS Assets folders ?
Such a "Preview" function would have been useful in the Scenario editor, rather than having to plonk one into it just to see what it looks like ! ;)

Sorry Otto, making a Shape Viewer is way beyond me, pity Paul Gausden decided not to touch RS at all, he would have been able to fix this.
And yes, the .ace files are in a different format to the MSTS ones, and I do not know how you can view them.

Otto,
It's called..."A Labour of Love." ~ And, the time taken has nothing to do with Rail Simulator itself. ~ It is all dependant on the "Attention to Detail" & "Quality of Texture" or number of "Art Passes" you wish to produce.
A 3D Model of a simple Box Car or Wagon... could take about a weekend to produce in 3dsMax or 3DCanvas... at full Detail, ~ The Artwork, about a week all together.
Scratch Building a Loco Model from a Brass kit, could take 5 months easy... when you are doing it in your spare time. As would creating something as detailed with moving parts in CAD for a Simulator.
