Looks really nice! So, when modelling locomotives, do you start with a polygon and use a subtractive method or model various shapes and fuse the together? Do you think you'll use the stock SD40 cab interior with some mods or create a new one?

NorfolkSouthern_37
05-26-2008, 09:28 PM
both ways really. it depends on the shape. i think at first this will use the default cab interior. making new ones is a lot of work. im only one person.

Was just wondering. Are you going to allias the SD40-2 cab from the game or make your own? Don't forget to do the animations ( wipers, wheels, fans, etc). Take care and keep up the good work.

1: Where did you find a real BNSF GP-38 that looked that clean?

2: How did you get it posed in an all-grey background?

3: Or is that actually a 3D model you did? ;-) No way, it looks too real! Keep up the great work!!!

Hi NSscale!!

If NS_37 allow me, I can answer two of your quuestions..firts, I think that the textures are made in photoshop, maybe based on a photo but it is not directly a photo, second it's appear that its a screenshot of a 3D Studio RENDER, maybe i'm wrong, correct me if it's necessary...

AWESOME MODEL!!! keep like that!! it's seem that is goingo to be the best add-on to KRS.

well, its coming along pretty well considering (that i dont know what im doing). ive got some geometry test shots from in the game. i couldnt reach the site so ive made much progress since then. now you can couple to traincars and pull them around! shes got couplers now... a big plus for a train locomotive.
working on cab interior sometime today/night.

i think that i will leave out a drive simply becuase i dont want every locomotive in the train to have a driver. when there is no driver visible, as you said, its hard to even tell. but when there is a driver in every cab, it becomes noticable.

Not long now. i've been very busy working on the features.

This is a completely new locomotive, the only things that are not brand new are some sounds from the game SD40 for the cab and the couplings, which are already in the game.

Features include:

High detail level
Easily re-skinable
Accurate sounds including horn and engine sounds
Custom cab interior
Stuff i didnt think id do. lol

Congratulations NorthfolkSouthern on a job well done! I haven't been doing much right now on my SW1500 ( i've been working on some other models so i have a wealth of objects to work with and define for export to KRS) but i'll get around to it. After I Install it I start the game and nothing shows up then i move the gp 38 files to the railsimulator us folder to sound , particles , etc. I start it up again and click on them and they still don't show up. Any idea as to why this is happening? They show up in the menu just not on the tracks.
Yes, I deleted the blueprints.dat file.

NorfolkSouthern_37
08-28-2008, 02:01 PM
because they do not belong in the railsimulatorUS folder, they belong where they install to from the package. to use them you must activate them in the editor content panel.

greendude
08-28-2008, 02:02 PM
what's that ? is it in the developer tools?

NorfolkSouthern_37
08-28-2008, 02:09 PM
no its in the scenario editor in any version. i think its the blue cube looking thing with an arrow on it called 'object set filter', should activate a menu on the far right side with a pulldown in it containing all of the developer names in it. choose JCornell in that box and place a check in the box near EMD.

This is a great model. It's hands down my favorite engine in KRS. Think you could be persuaded to do an A,C &W R repaint?

jasonjanise
11-20-2008, 02:19 PM
I have a question. I can load the GP-38 and place it on the tracks and I can even go inside the cab, but I can not control it. I guess what I mean to say is I can not get it to move. I can move the dynamic brake handle, push the bell button, pull the horn lever, but I can not get it to move. What did I or what am I doing wrong?

Jason

jessiejames2
11-20-2008, 03:11 PM
Your not alone I can't use them ether? all the lever's won't move I gave up! the GP-38 is not the right scale anyways, the GP-9 is the right scale but again I can move it so you better off using the SD-40-2 that came with the game, at least it works:p

rrroberttt
11-20-2008, 03:45 PM
You must set up the controls in the program to at least intermediate controls to use this model. It will not work with simple controls.

what do you mean its not the right scale? it is made close to scale as really matters using prototype dimensions. that sir, is insulting.

the controls were not scripted in the other control modes. maybe sometime i will add the simple controls but i figured if you are using simple mode you might as well not be using the cab controls to drive.

too much work and not enough pay!

jasonjanise
11-20-2008, 07:07 PM
I could care less about the scale or how close it is. I think it is a great job that you did and I am just happy to have something other than the same ol' engines to drive around. Hell, if you are not happy with something, then my attitude is then go build it yourself. Do not knock someone elses work even more so when the guy does it on his own time and did not charge you a dime for it. If I could design these types of things, I would. Be that as it may, I can not, so I depend on the work that the talented guys who can do. I just need to figure out how to run the GP-9 now. I am assuming it uses the same intermediate controls? Is that correct.

Jason

Its unfortunate how some people in this forum do not take the time to think of what they are saying before they post. This GP-38 is by far one of the best additions to the very small U.S locomotive rosters. After one year of KRS, there are only a few new engines. I for one am very thankfull for any new content. why not? the font should be in the alpha channel.

jessiejames2
11-27-2008, 12:48 PM
I have the Font but making pos+neg alpha channels to match those you have would be more work then Fun? so I think it looks good the way it is. one other problem I found is if I put more that two custom Gp38's in the GP38 folder only two show up? like the Default SD40 you can have as many as you want as long as you rename the bin file so how do I have more then two GP38's I see you named the BNSF-1 in the Bin file I don't think it matters what you name it right?

If you use photoshop you can use this nifty thing called an Action. Record what you do once. Save it. Repeat on different texture. Saves plenty of time. :)

problem I found is if I put more than two custom Gp38's in the GP38 folder only two show up? like the Default SD40 you can have as many as you want as long as you rename the bin file. and why does the numbers only default to the main BNSF-1 that means I can't have custom numbers? Hack, just because Jessie's repaint looks like the rock's trainz skin doesn't mean it IS the rock's skin. Besides jessie could have based it off of the rock's.......
They may look similar but that doesn't mean they're the same , and jessie just because someone said you plagiarized someone elses work doesn't mean the whole community thinks you did. Alot of people have been accused of it but still kept on making and releasing objects and reskins.
As for me i think your work is amazing..........so keep up the good work.

CD705
11-29-2008, 12:27 PM
That's unfair to Hack he did nothing wrong, just pointing out what everyone can see above.

You shouldn't use other peoples work and pass it off as your own, give credit where credit due and ask for permission to use someone elses textures.

yeah but didn't he accuse jessie of plagiarism ?
What if jessie did make that skin from scratch?

Well I compared the pictures before they were removed and I believe the textures to be the same, whilst it is possible for two people to make near identicle skins it is highly unlikely and as Hack said

Judging by the dirt smudges and the dynamic brake shadow, it would appear that it's your work.

Not an accusation, but an observation.

Jessie, it is common courtesy to ask a creator if you can use their textures, i got in trouble for this very early, and i have found it is always a good idea to get permission before releasing. They spent alot of time creating the textures, the least you can do is send them a simple email, most creators will not have a problem with it. You have definitely contributed alot to RailSim but that doesnt give you the right to use other peoples textures without permission. I think that a simple apology here would be more appropriate, instead of threatening to stop sharing your reskins. Just use it as a lesson for the future, that if you want to use someones textures ask them for permission before you release the reskin.

Like I said, I'm not trying to get you out of reskinning, It'd just be nice if you could send an email for permission first.

*edit* ok Nikos said it better and at the same time.

Jessie your skins are great keep it up, but there are 4 or 5 people on this forum, myself included that have put alot of hard work into making the game better by providing "NEW" objects & locos. So you are not the only one that improved KRS.
