Well instead of drums, I was thinking more along the lines or the variety of musical stuff.
hmm
Well anyways. Me..
I play the 4 string bass guitar, and do backing vocals.
Did have a band, but I dropped out, as they where rather, edgy with me, sorry life is more important. ;)

I can play the drums, it's not my main instrument though. I picked it up playing on the demo sets at guitar center. I'm hoping to get enough money by the end of the summer to buy a nice Pearl set with a few good cymbals.
In my band however, I play the bass (Fender Jazz Bass) and do backup vocals, and occasionally keys, sax, and 12 string guitar (Another Fender Guitar.) I'm recording our gig tomorrow night. If anyone's interested I'll post parts of it on Youtube.
I'd say Neal Peart is my favorite drummer, but I'm somewhat biased since Rush is my favorite band. John Bonham of Zeppelin was pretty good too.

Sticks, brushes, mallets...
Oh , Jon, I've scrapped the idea of refinishing my dream kit in Black Marine Pearl. Ive sold my 28 inch kick and found a 30" ! Its 19 inches deep , and you can actually hear the thing when yer playing onstage. A 14x14 top tom, 18x18 floor, plus some custom stuff...
Ive settled on this look for them, Crushed Gold Glass..

These just pop under stage lights!
The kicker ( pardon the pun! ) is that Offset-Pedal.com now has a new pedal that you can play from the right or left as remote, so that you now can sit square behind the kit, looking straight ahead.

I agree Hawk. That is a very nice drumset you have there. Been years since I really played the drums of any kind. I did get behind a set and played a little this past April when I was on vacation in Los Angeles at my brothers studio.

I have to agree on Chris Adler there. I'm also a fan of Neil Peart. I know my way around a trap set, and the bass, play a little guitar, I've been known to tickle some ivories, etc...

Cannons? Is that a good thing or a bad thing. :D
I do miss that drum set. I put hydraulic heads on it and it sounded good.
Sure kept my feet busy. ;) I got to where I could actually play Wipe Out on the double base.
I'd have to say my biggest influence on play style was Gene Krupa, Keith Moon, and Ginger Baker.

Its a good thing Hawk. Those double kits they came out with in the late 70's were the impetus behind a resurgence of the heavy metal movement, and Yamahas were the 'weapon of choice' at the time. In fact Yamy just did a re-release of the exact same kits this year.
I like listening to some of the same drummers already listed. Bands like Rush and Dream Theater, et al, are musicians' musicians. But my favourites are those drummers who play the groove.

No problem Paul. I show a pic of the bass I use. (Yamaha 4 string bass) I am planning to buy a 4 or 5 string ESP-LTD. However, I no longer have a digital camera.
Yes, bring on the before and after shots. ;)
BTW, Nicko from Iron Maiden.. err I should have known! Now I feel dumb.

Great to see so many other drummers around here. I personally use a basic black cannon 5 piece set with 14" Zildjian ZBT hats, a 20" ZXT rock ride, and an 18" A Custom series crash. I had a 16" ZXT crash cymbal and an 18" ZBT crash ride, but both cracked on me! Bummer... I have a 10" Paiste accent cymbal on my extra stand that I used to use for my 16" crash. Its got just a single bass pedal, but the set does everything I need it to do. I play anything from funk grooves to hard rock. Mostly play along with some stuff on my stereo like Van Halen, Zeppelin, Rush, Average White Band (my favorite funk/pop group of the 70s), Chili Peppers, Chicago, Boston.... Anything with a rock feel to it really. But I'd have to say my favorite drummer is Neil Peart too. I am also a fan of Steve Gadd and Tris Imboden.

Time to upgrade past those ZBTs Jon. I cant tell you what cymbals are best ,cos its really between you and your ears, but there's some amazing stuff coming from some of the newer labels these days, well worth checking out.
Never hit a cymbal dead-on, always use a side swipe. Hits made dead-on or 'straight-on' if you prefer, will overstress the metal, fatiguing it, leading to also sorts of breakage.
What happens is, the force you've applied to the cymbal, radiates in waves around the cymbal, and are somewhat 'amplified' back at the point of impact. Usually, the stick is still in contact as the first wave arrives, and this adds to the stress. This all happens in the blink of an eye. ( nanosecond, if you prefer! )Using a side-swipe, means your stick is gone before the shock wave arrives. This also helps to protect your sticks from damage, not to mention the fingers hands, wrists, arms, elbows and shoulders, from the shock as well. And of course your cymbals will last a whole lot longer.
Ive got old Zildjian and UFIP cymbals from the forties stiil as sweet as the day they were made, and sticks over thirty years old still playable because of that small change in technique.

I'm a pretty angry person, so I think if I ever actually get a kit, I'll end up playing in a manner pretty similar to Dave Grohl. I'll probably be replacing cymbals and drumheads a lot.

I have just about all those already just from being alive, so it doesn't really matter. It makes playing guitar a pain in the ass (actually, it makes just about anything a pain in the everything), but then again, there's always just getting over it. The Carpal tunnel really isn't quite so bad after a really severe case of pneumonia. The lungs keep me pretty well distracted - you should hear me sing!

haha I just got back from drumming :D
Broke a stick though. One of Zildjian's beastly Absolute Rock sticks... the but tip ones. It was already cracked though... Stepped on it when it was sitting on one of legs to my hit hat stand. Just duct tapped it together till it broke for good.

Brand Van 3000 were fantastic playing at the corner of Jeanne-Mance and Sainte-Catherine Tuesday night. I couldn't believe the radio the following morning rush hour whining about how the egoless-esque band --what?-- 'wiped out' from covering all types of genres from thrash (punk?) right around to old-school soul. Zillions of ears loved all their live rhythms.....can a glitch glitch a glitch?

I don't know bout drums, but I do play the guitar tho. Here is a picture of me and my tele. I won't get on a conversation about the best guitarists, thats a upcoming flame war lol.
Random Drummers I like:
Sam Loeffler (of Chevelle)
David Powell (of Emery)
John Dolmayan (of System of a down, my favorite, awesome)
Aaron Gillespie (Underoath, awesome singer as well)

They have some really good stuff tho. The true reason is listen to them is because of Daron, he can come up with some simple but awesome riffs. It honestly makes me want to get a Ibanez Iceman! (what he played on the first 3 albums, last 2 was a SG Gibson)
Yea they are rather crazy, considering crazy screamy voices and just random nonsense. I agree with you there Erick.

I thought I'd typo'd their (altered, right?) name...I think my folks had an album of theirs from the '70s.
Man, Montréal had better moult again, it's become too flippin' sanitized -- by the nonsense happenin' even around these boards, I say Montréal's poisoned source is now pretty exposed.
You go out to a show and nobody shakes their booty any more. This québecois band Beast (amazingly rockin' hardcore woman in a flimsy sack dress and dull high boots)
http://www.montrealjazzfest.com/Fijm2008/images/spectaclesFiches/beast_f.jpg from http://www.montrealjazzfest.com/Fijm2008/programmation/fiche_en.aspx?showId=640
got me groovin' at their also-free outdoor jazz-fest concert, and some twerp of a six-foot-six goon of an audience member in front of me took to often turning back and at glaring me, when I think he was trying so damned hard to sneer, coz I was snappin' my fingers to the rhythms.
Man.

I mean, how is forgetting sanity possible around here, it's right astonishing?!
