Has anyone found any limitations of MSTS with the number of routes you have. Has anyone had too many routes and MSTS would not work because of it ?

I have over 400 routes installed plus a couple of mini routes. All run without problems. I use Train Store.

It seems that MSTS can handle about a 1000 consists. There are several ways to solve the problem of MSTS not loading because of too many consists: Trainstore and the use of mini-routes. There are a lot of topics about both issues.

I don't know what the exact number is, but I think it's somehwhere between 15 - 24 routes, It will give you route errors, then shut down or lock up when you exceed the number. Train store solves these problems however.

I run 35 routes on the main install without TrainStore. Only problem is that the sim takes afew minutes to load. Also use about a dozen minis.

MSTS loads all the basic route and consist information upon startup. You start tying up resources when you have lots of consists and routes. That leaves less resources for the route itself which can result in the unexpected crash when trying to run a large route on systems with under 1 meg ram.

You avoid such problems by deleting no longer needed routes and consist, or use Train Store, or place demanding routes in their own mini route like we did with the massive PRR Eastern.
