SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge in New York has ordered Google to turn over to Viacom a database linking users of YouTube, the Web’s largest video site by far, with every clip they have watched there.

NEW YORK - Dismissing privacy concerns, a federal judge overseeing a $1 billion copyright-infringement lawsuit against YouTube (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/ap/ap_on_hi_te/storytext/youtube_lawsuit/28113040/SIG=10psi9dkb/*http://www.youtube.com/) has ordered the popular online video-sharing service to disclose who watches which video clips and when.

Viacom said it isn't seeking any user's identity. The company said any data provided "will be used exclusively for the purpose of proving our case against YouTube and Google (and) will be handled subject to a court protective order and in a highly confidential manner."

If you believe that last paragraph, then, I have this bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. How long before the greedy leaches of viacom find out that they can shake a huge money tree by demanding tribute from every internet user of You Tube under threat of a bankrupting lawsuit much like the recording industry has been doing the past few years?

about the same length of time it takes to realise that most Youtube users would abandon the site enmasse should they even think about charging a fee of any kind.
