I'm new to this. Can someone please explain the process of making objects for MSTS?

You need a 3D Design Program. There are several available, but only a few are compatible with MSTS. And that is likely to change with the advent of MSTS-X (MSTS-2) in the foreseeable future. Most have a steep learning curve and a fair amount of patience is a plus.

You might want to peruse this particular thread in detail. I’m sure something will catch your interest.

Have a sparkling evening,

Well I know of a program called Gmax that I've used in the past for other gaming projects. Is this compatible? If not, what programs are compatible?

Yes, GMAX is, in my opinion, the best one. There is an MSTS plug in that will export models directly into the correct format on Microsoft's website.

In addition, there's a tutorial on www.elvastower.com (http://www.elvastower.com) to get you started.

This is my latest project in GMAX:

And this was my latest release:

http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/attachment.php?attachmentid=4170&stc=1&d=1212733297

I've also done a number of static objects, including snow fences:

http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/attachment.php?attachmentid=3774&stc=1&d=1210612711

They have the cross-bracing now, and they've been 'weathered' but I don't have any up to date shots of them.

I also have Train Sim Modeller from Abacus, which is a good tool, also, but if you've already used GMAX, you'll find yourself up to speed pretty quickly.

Do you know where I can find this? The only thing on Microsoft's website that I can find is an update for MSTS. Nothing related to route designing.
