What does "G" sign stand for on the signals? Does this mean the train is approaching a grade? If so, how does the engineer know if the the grade is upgrade or downgrade?

Thanks!

the G will only be on intermediate signals and means that signal is a "Grade" signal. all of the grade signals i have seen are used for going uphill.

when a train is approaching a "Grade" signal, and the indication of the grade signal is "stop and proceed at restricted speed," the train can proceed past the signal at restricted speed WITHOUT stopping. this would be when a train is approaching an intermediate signal with a red aspect.

when lugging a heavy train uphill, this is nice as you don't have to stop and start on a heavy grade BEFORE this signal. BEWARE, you may have to stop just beyond this signal to meet the requirements of restricted speed.......
