View Full Version : Problem:new objects won't show in Route Editor

The problem I'm experiencing is this: I want to add more objects (bldgs & etc) to my route. I add the shape and texture files and add the object to the REF file as I have done in the past, making sure all entries are done correctly. Then I open RE, click on "More" in the Placement window and scroll down looking for the class listing of the object I just entered. Nowhere to be found! The RE simply doesn't show any of the new objects I just added, and it doesn't give me any error messages either to let me know I screwed someting up in the process.

It's like the RE has decided that I can no longer add any more objects and that doesn't make any sense to me. However, I may be missing something in this querky MSTS: is it possible to block objects with some command or someting? I've tried re-installing the REF file, and reconstructing the REF file, but still the bldgs don't show up in the Placement Window of RE.

Anybody ever experience this problem, or have an idea what I can do to get the RE to reveal the objects I've just added to the REF file? I'm really stumped!!!!

Try putting an entry in the ref file right after the standard entries at the top. Make sure the brackets are correct. If it shows up in the RE , then you have a bracket problem toward the bottom of the ref file. If it still doesn't show up make certain that the .s, .sd, and .ace files are in the routes shape & texture folders. Also make sure you have all the .ace files called for by the shape file. Make sure the ref entry is correct, all brackets in place.

Hi John, thanks for the response. This is happening with the Marias Pass v4 (Hi-Line) route, which has given me a lot of problems.* I notice that many of the entries in the REF file don't follow the standard indentation format....many are just straight lines of text, and there are a lots of spaces throughout too, like the author didn't spend any time proof-reading, or perhaps the file was corrupted somewhere along the way. Can't tell which at this point.

Perhaps you are right about the brackets and syntax, because I notice there are a number of entries in the author's REF file which don't show up in the Placement window in addition to the ones' I've added.

l'll try your suggestion and see what that brings.

Jon

PS (A little later)
I copied one of my entries and placed it at the top of the REF file list and lo and behold....it showed up. Clever idea John! Now I know it's due to a syntax error. Will just have to take the time and work my way down that long REF File list until I find the missing whatever, or obvious error and fix it.
Thanks for the idea.

Jon:

Before you plow into that ref file, try this. Remove the ref file and store it someplace outside MSTS. Open Route Riter and create a new .ref file. It will produce something a little easier to work with.

You were right John. Halfway down I found a missing bracket and when I replaced it, all the followig entries in the REF file, showed up. That was it!!

Thanks again for the tip. Computers can be truly frustrating things...half your problems turn out to be simple errors like a missing character or one wrong letter/number/symbol. When it comes up against it, the cptr just stops and sits there; leaving you to hunt the error down on your own!

Thanks again!!

I used Route_Riter to fix my REF errors. Have a look at http://steam4me.railpage.org.au/trainsim/tutorials/fix_ref_file.html#quickfix - it worked for me in a flash.
