View Full Version : Sadly leaving MSTS

Sadly I am leaving MSTS as it is no longer enjoyable with it's incompatibility factors associated with Windows Vista. Even with a high end PC and graphics they do nothing to improve on it. Therefore I eagerly await, if ever, the introduction someday of a new MSTS, like Flight Simulator X was to FS9, I hope it will be do the same.

While I don't have Vista, nor would I ever use it, there are people here who have MSTS running on it pretty smoothly. Have you listed your issues and asked for help?
Good luck to you,
Neil :)

Before you quit MSTS, why don't you tell us what kind of PC; desktop or laptop and it's specs? I have MSTS running on my Vista laptop with no problem. It's not a high end laptop but it does work with a few tweaks to get it running smoothly.

I also have MSTS running pretty nice on my Vista system. Only problem I have had is some lockups that are probably related to my video card. My system is somewhat shy on the power supply side I suspect. But I selected a card that did hot need an additional power connecter because of that.

I would suggest for you to read this post;

NorEasterNick, Your specs looks ok to me and it's about the same as my laptop. For your widescreen, if you can find your video card control panel to check "Preserve aspect Ratio' for your video settings (Note; you will have black bars on both sides of screen this is normal). Current MSTS does not run good on widescreen.

I have both FS9 and FSX on my computer, running Vista with a Q6600, a GF 8800GT, and 2GB of ram. FS9 is the better performer in the FPS stakes.
Looking now at MSTS, the performance is much better, faster and smoother than ever before. The secret to running MSTS in Vista is contained in the first post here, http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?t=269559 Ignore the pictures that are not there any more, and read the words. Follow those instructions and you will have a better MSTS.

Actually folks I've tried every suggestion posted here. There are significan problems associated with third party downloads, yes I made the appropriate system changes to accept the downloads, too many are blown out of the water with Vista. Additionally, the clearity I've come to appreciate and expect from Flight Simulator X leaves a great deal to be desired in the MSTS application. And finally, tweaking keyboards and the like to make it work to perfection, as it did on my XP system is just not worth the aggrevation. I love Train Simulator, and maybe my answer is in pulling the old/new XP out of retirement and setting up an additional system, hummm, just maybe . . . .Thanks for the advice.

I'm having a very hard time understanding this "downloads blown out of the water with Vista" business. While it's all dramatic and so forth to make these statements, it doesn't give us anything to work with. What the devil do you mean?
I've got gig after gig of payware and freeware downloads installed without a hitch in Vista SP1, and all I needed was a bit of advice from folks in a thread of my own making.

It would seem you do not grasp the detail . . .there are specific downloads, specifically ROUTES that are NOT adaptable to Windows Vista gaming PC's, like the one I own. Therefore when all the rules of engagement are followed to the letter, MSTS using the Vista application does no fully permit the application to be downloaded to the point that it becomes workable, therefore, my terminology, "blown out of the water". Route Riter confirms this when used.
Yes, yes,yes....MSTS does work in Vista, but to fully appreciate it's limited applications in Vista, well, what you see is what you get...have a nice day.

Can you be clear on which specific routes are you talking about? We have no idea what route it is. As far as I know, I have both payware and freeware routes working on my Vista machine with no problems. If you are talking about routes that requires install.bat to work, I can get it to work. I think you have to make it "run as administrator." Other than that, I have no clue what specific route you are mentioning.:confused:

Oldtimer, if you can't explain the problems you are presently having with the sim on Vista, then your post serves little more purpose then trolling.
Do you wish for us to help, or are you simply seeking others to pity your predicament?

From what I gather, its sounds like hes saying with the graphics he has with Flight Simulator X and smoothness of operation (On Vista) this game has, yet when you run a game with dated graphics (MSTS) and you cant get decent frames with payware addons it leaves you feeling like giving up (Like I do at least twice a week) He probably had one of those forget it moments and you would think this would be the place to find a shoulder to lean on. I just hung MSTS up again but Ill be back....I always do. Im feel your pain oldtimer but Im just now getting s system that will run anything I throw at it and Im so burnt out on MSTS as you put it 'left me with a great deal to be desired' Good luck!

i personally think that people who have these problems and instantly blame it on vista are the reason vista gets such a bad rep. there is really nothing wrong with vista if you are keeping your hardware and software just as up to date as the OS. MSTS runs just fine on vista, and every piece of payware i have runs just as well as it does on my xp machine. i dont know of anything in vista that would cause msts, let alone some single piece of content for it. i am not the only lucky guy that vista works for, i just think that vista is probably too far ahead of most of its users who do not wish to adapt to it, therefore they say it is terrible.
Hi Oldtimer! What graphics card do you have? I had to change mine to a GeForce8800Gt to get the train sim graphics to work with Vista.

Beta testers with Vista for the PRR Eastern mini route have been successfully running this route under Administrator. You need 2G or more of memory due to Vista hogging so much memory. I also believe that Vista needs to have its Service Pack 1 in order to fix the numerous bugs in that operating system.
