As I understand this, we will be able to travel the earth on existing rail lines, even though MSTS2 will not have them as routes. Is this a big deal to the route builders out there or am I missing something?

Depends of quality of included routes in WOR. Some maybe very good, some maybe aren't worth much.

What you get, for virtually all locations in the world, is DEM, terrain textures, a base level of track (some more accurate than others), and autogen scenery. Contrast this to Trains1 where you had, well, nothing.
Translated, this means you're starting with an existing "world" and your task for route development becomes more about building out the details instead of all the base level stuff. Or put another way, you can focus on doing the painting instead of making the canvas.... ;)

what about starting new like laying your own track and tress and rivers etc.. or is it just one world where everything place and you just do touch ups.

If I remember correctly, Ive heard that fictional routes will be made if anyone is interested in doing them. I have been thinking of maybe doing a fictional route in the Donner Pass area. Anything is possible, But I hope we hear from one of the team members of this sim to let us know about fictional routes.
Fictional routes, in particular like the infamous SeaView, are easily placed possibly in islands off some of the oceans we know, maybe like the Pacific. Would make for an even interesting water scenery particularly if the waves are like in MSFS.

So it's not possible to build a route from scratch?

You don't need to; the track is already there, essentially.

You will be able to build a fantasy track if you choose.
The tools will allow you to make new track and to recreate old lines if you choose.
We just give you the data we have aquired from various sources. No one said you had to use it. :-)

Forgive me if this has been asked/answered before, I tried search but couldn't find a direct answer..
I understand how you have all the rail data, etc. However how about sidings/industries? Will the WOR have some real world sidings at least, or will there be "generic" sidings that are fantasy placed at random points?

Just this once :D

Are you sure you tried

Not true. It depends on where you are in the world. In some places, the default data set is very detailed, and does include yards, sidings, passing sidings, spurs, branch lines, and so forth. In other places, it's more sparse.
Additionally, we will be processing WoR data to include passing sidings every so many miles so that you are able to pass other trains on these sidings. Additionally, we will auto-place signals every few miles to provide the ability to operate on signal indication. These sidings and signals won't be accurate necessarily, but they will be plausible based on real-world heuristics.

when using the world of rails(as opposed to one of the actual included routes) will we know where we are?for example if I want to run a train or add scenery from ,say, Novi Sad to Belgrade, will there be auto generated towns where the real towns and cities would be located in between and named? In flight simulator air ports are named (tens of thousands of them!)and located in the game and on a world map with your aircrafts location as you travel.

I'd guess there is something similar ... Or they give us a WOR version of this (http://www.microsoft.com/streets/docs/main.html) :p

Will the World of Rails data be on the included media, DVD, or will a network connection be required to download the data?
Having a network connection allows for the possibility of more data than can fit on media and easier updating of data but has the disadvantage that the network servers may be turned off reducing the value of the program.

As far as I know the Data will be included on the DVD, like in FlightSimulator X. In my oppinion this is as flexible as a network solution, because you can buy via DVD or donwload via Internet Add-Ons (Free- or Payware) which replace the WoR-Scenery.
This is the way itīs going to be ;)

If you run on the default routes of MSTS at 60MPH you will find it takes around 48 seconds more or less to go a mile.So even if you have taken the trouble to get the physics right on your rolling stock you still cannot run it against real world schedules or recorded runs. For World of Rails and for MSTX routes, would it be asking too much that they get that right?
Please, pretty please ,get it right. We don't need KUJU magic here.
