Great video! When I seen all those "game ready" cars it made me think it would be nice to have those texture files so they could be repainted multiple times before the game even came out! I know Im dreaming and leagal stuff blah blah blah, just a thought.

I wonder how many polys those cars are! If you've ever been in the cab of an EMD locomotive - they've got it nailed!

What a job: Guys, I want you to spend a few months doing "research" by photographing, videotaping, and recording trains. Yeah. Go ahead, call that work!

I know it doesn't sound like a lot of work, however when we went on these research trips, typically we started around 6 or 7 in the morning and wrapped every day around midnight. The camera equiptment weighed around 100lbs and Rick and I both lost 10lbs, despite eating a pretty unnutritional diet.

We walked miles and miles of frieght yards, up and down large hillsides and through all kinds of scenery.

In Switzerland we basically walked up part of a mountian and around some very small trails to get to some of the trestles.

It was lots of work, but lots of fun as well.

As to the question of how many polys. It depends but usually around 20 to 30k triangles.

To invoke a well-used cliché, it's a hard job, but somone's gotta do it.

In all seriousness, Porter is correct - 18 hour days are the norm for these trips. You use all available daylight to photograph and videograph the subject matter, and then comes dinner with the partners, and then it's back to the hotel to spend hours downloading the day's take to the storage hard drives. At least this last part can be done over a frosty pint or three....

BTW, Porter is supposed to be on vacation for the next week. I see he hasn't pried himself away from the keyboard just yet.... :)

I doubt unfortunately that we will see 4449 - I think you will find this falls under the fallen flags issue and is therefore rolled up as part of UP, who is we all know tied up with the other sim, although the way things have been going with that, that may well be rolled and folded by the time TS2 hits the shelves in 18 months or so.

Cheers

Wow thats a lot for the railcars if it is. I actually am looking forward to this game. It looks like it will be great. Maybe I should hold off my route building for this one. :)

No, that's for the locomotives. The rolling stock is around 15 to 19k polys.

It's really exciting to see how much hands-on research is going into this...should yield a great product in the end!

Thats interesting Mike, from what I see, this will be well worth the wait. :)
As for 15k to 19k poly's wow, the rolling stock looks amazing for that low of poly's.
