I do not sleep well if something is wrong and I cannot figure it out.
After laying awake in bed several hours last night pondering why my copy of the orginal Alps route would not work with MK2, I got up around 4:00 am and started trying things.
I knew that I could load one scenario (Merci Per Cimalago) and had actually created a two new scenarios (free roam and standard) that also loaded. I therefore concluded that there was nothing wrong with the route and infrastructure itself, the problem must lay with the specific scenarios. I also created a 'blank' freeroam scenario with no rolling stock at all.
I noticed that the new 'blank' scenario folder did not have a scenario.bin file included in it, so I figured all that file specified was the starting location for any consist as well as driver instructions.
I then went into the Alps Route scenarios.bin file (note the s and the end of scenarios as opposed to the scenario file that is in each scenario folder). Thinking that somehow the rolling stock for the scenario was causing the scenario not to load, I then deleted all consists from the FREEROAM SCENARIO portion of the scenarios.bin file.
I then restarted RS and noted that all scenarios for the Alps route listed after the FREEROAM SCENARIO had disappeared, never the less, I selected the FREEROAM SCENARIO and it loaded. However, it did not load anywhere near the actual route. If I used the compass drop down menu to fly to a location for the route, it would start to create the route at that point and then crash. If I restarted the sim, loaded the FREEROAM at its location, and then using the compass entered a lat and long near the route, I could get the entire route to load, use the 8 key to fly to a route location, and then use the compass location list to actually choose a route location and fly there and the route would completely load. I was also able to select a locomotive and run it in the scenario.
This, however, was not the right way to solve the problem. I had started out thinking that the rolling stock caused the problem, but instead identified a problem with where the scenario was loading.
After restoring the my backed up copy of the scenarios.bin file, I then had the idea of checking into the 'gizmo' part of the scenarios.bin folder. What I ended up doing was copying the portion of the scenarios.bin file for my new free roam scenario (mentioned in the third paragraph above) from <Gizmo> to <Gizmo>, and then pasted that into the FREEROAM SCENARIO portion of the scenario.s bin folder.
After verifying that that worked, the FREEROAM SCENARIO loaded and ran correctly, I did the same for the other two Alps scenarios that did not work (Merci Dell 7:30 and ES 4521). I also used the same gizmo data for the ALPS-OTTO route. Now I have all of the original Alps scenarios and the ALPS-OTTO route and scenario loading and running with MK2.
I have not gone into any detailed analysis of what was wrong with the original gizmo entries, so I really do not know why they didn not work. I only know that they do now with my revisions, and I can finally get a good nights sleep.
