Got frustrated with issues on the ALPS route on MK2, so deleted both the Otto version and the author's version using RS_Tools. Thought this would give me a clean slate to work with but as luck would have it.....
I loaded all three of Otto's latest downloads. I did not reload the author's version. The route and scenarios appear in the sim lists OK. Unfortunately, when the route loads, I get the error that is attached saying that there is an unknown version of a binary file. I did see that someone else had seen this similar thing on another thread, but no one offered a solution that I could find.
When I ran Mike Simpson's RS Tools and ran the "Check Route" function, it came up with a huge list of missing files.
The part that is strange is that before I deleted the routes I was able to run a free roam without issues. I previously had both Otto's and the Author's routes installed, however.
Any ideas as to how to resolve the unknown file issue?

The Italian site http://www.railsimulator.it/ has a new version with the title:
Ferrovie delle Alpi
for downloading. I have the original version installed too, but some assets are still missing:
Following item(s) were missing from this route:-
D:\Spiele\Rail Simulator\Assets\icepak\ice\oelfa_nr1\oelfa_nr1. bin
D:\Spiele\Rail Simulator\Assets\icepak\ice\oelfa_nr2\oelfa_nr2. bin
D:\Spiele\Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\railnetwork\tr ackrules\newc_york_trackrules_yard_rusty.bin
The strange characters are probably the German "scharfes s" which look almost exactly like the greek letter beta: ß. I think the person who uploaded this asset didn't realize that you should not use such characters like the German Umlaut or the ß in a file name.
Trying now to find the file and change both the filename and its references in a tile. I even believe that it was done before by somebody else.

For the original Alps route with MK2:
It was my experience that the loading error was related to individual scenarios, not the route itself. One scenario "Merci per Cimalago" would load. I then found out that if you copied the <gizmo> portion of the routes senarios.bin file from "Merci per Cimalago" and used it to replace the <gizmo> portion of one of the scenarios that was not loading, that scenario would work.
I do not know why this fixes it, just that it does, and this was the result of many experiments changing items in the scenarios.bin file trying to get the faulty scenarios to load.

Both the original ALPS and my ALPS-OTTO cause this error in the with MARK-2 updated RS, Mike Simpson also gets and is trying to figure out what Marco (Pedro) has changed in the last update of the route which does not crash MARK-2 !
If my www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/rs/alps-assets.zip has been installed then the number of missing assets will shrink to about a dozen, which does not affect the running of any version of the ALPS, I have posted a screenshot of recently !

Dick,
Could you provide the file location for the scenarios.bin file that you fixed? RS doesn't make this easy since the file names are not "intelligent" (aren't plain English). Also, I noticed that in other scenario.bin files the "gizmo" appears as <gizmo/>, so I know what to look for, but where does each "gizmo" section begin and end. Is there a delimiter of some kind to mark the gizmo sections? Need to know how much to copy.
Thanks for your input.

The file that needs to be changed is:
C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\Content\Routes\8c8e02d6-05c5-4433-bda7-da8d0eb7364d\scenarios.bin
This is the <gizmo> section that needs to be replaced for each non loading scenario:

I am attempting to do the editing of the "gizmo" sections using RS_Tools, but discovered that Mike apparently hasn't included a copy and paste function, and there is no way I am going to try to hand type in that much data in 3 different locations, knowing that the next month would be spent fixing my own typos.
Is there another application that can do the job? Or, is there a secret code for RS_Tools that will let me copy and paste?
Thanks in advance for the info.

Put the cursor where you want it and hold the left mouse button down and drag
then "Ctrl+C to Copy" and "Ctrl+V to Paste"

Thanks for the info. I also discovered another neat way within RS_Tools that works even easier when you are copying and pasting entire sections like the "gizmo" sections. By switching over to the right tab for XML editing, just drilled down to the appropriate scenarios, then to the 'gizmo" section. In this section you can right click copy on the "gizmo", for instance, in the good version, and then right click paste in the other 3 "bad" gizmo sections. You don't get to see the xml text, but you are certain that the entire block of data was copied and pasted. Pretty neat. And.... it worked. All 4 scenarios in Otto's version now work perfectly. There ae a few tweaks needed in the scenarios themselves, but that has nothing to do with whether the route works or not.
Otto ought to make these same changes and issue a new updated version including moving the engine in the free roam scenario so that it doesn't interfere with the switch. This one works great.
Anyway, thanks for the inputs on the editor, as it adds to my knowledge base and makes RS Tools even more powerful in my mind.

Here are the missing Shimmns cargo files that you can download from this link for the alps route:-
http://www.mstrainstop.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=281
Also if you navigate back a couple times on this site you will find the missing First and Second class passenger stock (Avzm and Bimz). Could not find the ICE passenger stock, if someone knows where the download site is, would like to download the stock. Take care all.

The rolling stock for all versions of the ALPS is here: www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/rs/alps-rolling-stock.zip
Hope that you can still download it, bandwidth usage on my web site having reached it's monthly limit because of the high demand for the ALPS downloads and have asked it's host to extend it for the rest of this month.
No use uploading them to the File Library, frequent changes being necessary I do not want to trouble Nels with ! ;)

Hi Doug !
Otto ought to make these same changes.
Would be easier if you could e-mail me your zipped modified file/s I could then make available with an updated ZIP of my ALPS-OTTO version ! ;)
Use this link to e-mail it to: http://www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/oaw_000011.htm
Issue a new updated version including moving the engine in the free roam scenario so that it doesn't interfere with the switch.
Will do and should be on my web-site shortly: www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/rs/alps-mark-2.zip
Have included my "Named Route Markers" which come with the ALPS-OTTO so that those who have not downloaded it can also use them in the MARK-2 ALPS Freeroam scenario to jump to their locations ! ;)
Take care, O t t o.

No sign of it, Doug !
Try sending it again with your ZIP attached but not use my link and manually type my address into your mailer: http://forums.flightsim.com/vbts/attachment.php?attachmentid=6199&stc=1&d=1219771440
Had a few missing e-mails lately and could be that perhaps a non-MS mailer is being used ?
As it should be less than the ZIP limit for forum attachments, you could also attach it to your next message posted here ?

Sorry Otto, Just noticed that the previous upload had a bad file (the "good" file) in the zip. The one below has been corrected.
I did a file comparison, character by character using a copy of zsCompare Lite (nice tool), and the number of significant differences between the good and bad scenario.bin files is huge, not even counting those related to formatting. At this point, the fact that the "good" file makes the scenarios work is enough for me. No real value in analyzing the differences in any detail.

Hi Doug !
Installed your 25.Aug.08 ALPS Scenarios.bin into the original ALPS routes folder in the RS MARK-2 copy and still get the Serialized binary file error. Yes, I deleted all the RS Blueprints.pak files prior to running RS with your file installed.
Have you tried it in your MARK-2 RS ?
Will have a look into the recently released ALPS update's Scenarios.bin which does not have a problem with MARK-2 and compare it with the original !
Seems that we are back to the MSTS days when it was up to it's users to fix what needed fixing, not getting any help from MS nor KUJU and we are now not getting any from RSDL either ! :(
Take care, O t t o.

So I compared the first GIZMO section of the MARK-2 ALPS Freeroam parameters which works with the first of my ALPS-OTTO which does not work in MARK-2 and there is no difference between them.
All versions of the ALPS work perfectly in MARK-1 and apart from dynamic brakes not working, I can do without, everything else does more or less after much has been tweaked, such as the weather, fog, loco brakes, combined controls notching, horns, changing tracks and rails textures at will, etc, etc !
So whatever the problem with the earlier ALPS in MARK-2, the finger points at that update and I have had enough of it, especially this senseless increase of 30 additional language options, including Arabic and Trad.Chinese ! I can just see some of the latter's language symbols in menus, in on screen displays, in the scenario editors pull-put panels and in the #9 map ! ;)
I am not going to waste any more time trying to figure out this and perhaps other problems we have not yet stumbled upon and shall stick with MARK-1 !
Thanks for trying, Doug !
Take care, O t t o.

Otto,
I sincerely understand your frustration. It comes in waves for me, but I keep going at it a bit at a time, taking breaks when it gets too difficult. So, hang in there. We didn't have Kuju help or MS help with MSTS, and we did pretty good without them. I suspect the same will occur with KRS, and soon there will be another sim that may push the envelope even further, and maybe those guys have been listening and learned a few things. A little birdy has told me that might be true. One can hope.
Take care, Otto.
