If all I have to do to get a thread locked is say 'liberal,' 'conservative,' 'right wing,' or 'marmite,' what is there to prevent me from just dropping any of those in to get a thread locked?

How do we know this isn't being done already?

Are you getting where I'm going with this?

Maybe just deleting the posts from the people 'tarding the forum up is a better idea than locking entire threads?

Personally, what I'd do is edit the trolls' posts to make them look silly and/or out of character (just as an example, not indicative of any wrongdoing or personal opinions, but to demonstrate my way of doing things based on some members' pet peeves and/or demonstrated personalities, I'd probably edit Rob's posts to imply that he loved Jimmy Carter or something to do with sheep, Kenny's with rants about government stealing his nuclear weapons, and Bob Wirth's to imply Satanism), but how I police my forums is not necessarily how everyone else does it...

And I'm not complaining about how these forums are moderated, I'm just stating an observation.

I agree! Locking an entire thread because of a couple of bad posts is a bit ridiculous.

At my forums all I do is delete the post(s) or edit the cuss words, then warn the poster.
Of course, that does require a bit of diligence and I don't have near the traffic this board does, which makes my job a bit easier.

Even then, locking an entire thread is a bit overkill.

Come on guys, this is a Kinder, Gentler, Train-Sim.

People will be encouraged on all points. Negative reinforcement has never done any good. The only way to stop the 'NonConformists' is to spray them with water, and shake your finger at them. Say the word 'NO' in a commanding voice, to let them know that their behavior is unacceptable.

Kinder, Gentler, Train-Sim.

Ha.

Upon reflection, I guess my use of the word 'ridiculous' was a bit to harsh.
Instead of editing my post I'll swap 'ridiculous' in my previous post for overkill in this post. ;)
Never have been one to hide my 'bad calls'. :D

Has ANYONE contacted Nels or the Moderation with this issue? I'm certain they're willing to take suggestions.

I know that when a rift forms between the Membership and the Administration, a board will usually go all to hell. Keep the lines of communication open.

Us Mods are here and listening, but whats to keep things under control for Nels.Remember it is a private not public forum and with the Boss getting tired of the basing whats one to do but lock it or just delete it.
Yes there was some good posts but then for some strange reason some of the older long standing members here went off on a tangent and just kept pushing things.Theres nothing wrong with a healthy discussion without the name calling and that extends to even the polictics.

I don't want to sound rude, or sound like I'm trying to bash anyone, but, um, I'm not really clear on exactly what you mean...
