As a new comer to RS is there an easy way to figure out which way a switch is set and is there a way to look down the line without having to travel at 5mph to see if switches are correct? I find the little sticks next to the switch not very useful.
Thanks and if I missed an answer to this way back when I apologize.

Have you tried looking on the 2D map?
You pull that up with the '9' key. The switches are the blue circles and the blue line is the player's train path.
You can change the setting of the switches buy holding the shift key down and then left clicking the blue circle.
Return to the main view by hitting the '9' key again.

So the only real way to tell if your switching is ok is to go to the 2D map and check the route ahead of time? There is no little add-on that shows the direction of the upcoming switch?
Thanks

There is, it's the F3 Driver Aid, but you have to be almost on top of a switch before it shows you it's setting and have to clear trailing switches in front of it first before you can set them in the F3 window, having to crawl along if they are close together !
As Dick said, using the #9 Map is more convenient and in it can Pause key the action and while "Paused" can SHIFT-CLICK set switches at leisure, pressing Pause again to continue the action ! ;)

If you were to set up signals, or the route has signals, and they were visible more than 100 feet away that would be the most prototypical way but... other than as suggested above or using the 8 view and fly over to the location to see for yourself... nope.
