OK, I just downloaded and installed the new Google browser (Beta) and am using it for the first time to read the trainsim forum. Don't quite know what to think of it except in the few minutes I've been using it, it seems to be as fast as a bat out of hell.

Anybody else tried it yet and have some opinions about it? I understand that it's based on a Safari 3.5 engine and they put out a "comic book" introduction (I read the first 10 pages--sorry I don't have a link off hand although you can find it on ZDnet). To download the beta just type in < google > and go to "about google">"google services and tools".

Curious to know any pros and cons people see. I was an early adopter of Firefox and Opera. Opera I could take or leave, but Firefox became my browser of choice. Any opinion about a Google browser gaining market share?

Havn't seen it myself but did read a review: said it was blistering fast with any Java and rather slow on ordinary html. The review said similar things about IE 8 (it was comparing the two). On the whole, the review said both Chrome and IE 8 were interesting, but neither was complete.

Also, same guy thought Safari was just out and out bad, and while Firefox was best against IE 7 it didn't match up well against either IE 8 or Chrome.

Conclusion was he thought it was going to be very, very interesting to see what plays out between IE 8 and Chrome.

Dave,

Well, it is a beta. I noticed right off the bat that the google toolbar wasn't even available for it--when I tried to get it. Still, in finished form, I wonder. It's fast as lightening right now, but when they add all the bells and whistles everyone is clamoring for on their forum, then what? Maybe just another browser...

I tried IE8 Beta2, uninstalled in less than 24 hours. I know, it's a Beta. They've got a long ways to go...

I might have to try Chrome. I like IE7, believe it or not, but I have Firefox, and use it occassionally. I really should switch over, it seems to be more convenient in the way it does things. IE7 seems like a lot of stuff was added as an "afterthought" as opposed to being designed into it.

Opera? Hmmm, tried it, didn't like it, don't remember much about it other than it was remarkably slow....

Netscape, now there was a browser!

I've been using it for a few days now, after your post, and it seems really fast on two sites I visit that what I thought were really sluggish. One is MSNBC and the other is doityourself. Much faster with chrome. :)

One person did post this:

Google Chrome Download Vulnerability

added September 3, 2008 at 01:52 pm
US-CERT is aware of a vulnerability that affects the Google Chrome web browser. This vulnerability is due to a default configuration that allows files to be downloaded without prompting the user. In addition, downloaded files can be opened with a single click, which could allow a user to inadvertently open a malicious file.

US-CERT encourages users to enable the "Ask where to save each file before downloading" option within the "Minor Tweaks" tab in the browser preferences. Although this does not fix the underlying vulnerability, selecting this option will warn the user before files are downloaded. Users should still exercise caution when visiting and downloading items from untrusted websites.

US-CERT will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Then I tried to watch Alizee. The audio is right on but the video was very choppy at the beginning till it seemed to 'catch up'.

Like you say it is beta so we'll have to see how it comes along.
