Well, I've found blueprints for a certain 1980s Japanese lightweight sports coupe that I figure would make a perfect first gmax project. I'm wondering on how detailed I should get to please the accuracy hounds on here without completely killing framerates.

Carspawner shapes should be kept to a minimum, as the sim doesn't handle these too well. IMHO, 200 polys should yield some good results (500 polys for a static model, however).
