DEC And Computer System Hardware Integrity

In the Backup thread j flanagan brought up the subject of computers manufactured by DEC a long time ago. I said I would open a new thread for that subject. This is that thread ...   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   j flanagan,   It wasn't all sweetness and light regarding DEC computer system integrity. While our CPUs were very very reliable, our disk drives were not -- could not be -- comparably reliable. The affordable technology of the time simply did not permit it. The reason is that the hard drives

On-Site And Off-Site Backups

In the Digicam thread skylab and I got off onto the tangent of data backups. I said I would open a new thread for this stuff. This is that thread ...   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   skylab,   I'm like you -- paranoid about the possiblility of data loss, so I have everything backed up locally multiple times. However, for me this kind of approach is no longer sufficient to make me comfortable. I'm going to write about this subject again in the PC Software Tech forum, but for completeness you really sh

Yay Pilot Shop

Please understand up front that I'm involved in a joint venture with FlightSim.com. So in the story below you must consider whether I'm biased, though really I assure you that I'm not. When it comes to the Pilot Shop I'm just another customer, like you.   Anyway, I placed an order with the Pilot Shop on 11 July. It finally arrived yesterday, on 2 August ... And yet I'm going to say "Yay, Pilot Shop"?   Absolutely. Because during the time when the package was hung up in the US Postal Service, l

My "blog"?

My Blog. Well. I never thought I'd write one of these.   Ok, so, what am I up too? And where are my projects at?   Well, if you remember the Lightning F6 I was doing, that was the reason for me joining( see the Aircraft Design forum in Feb), that got put on the back burner. As did the SE5a. Although that will come sometime.   What I am doing at the moment is an update for the PSS Concorde, to put it in FSX. That should go out in the next few weeks.   Also, my major project at the moment

Digital Photography And Digital Darkroom Software

Over in his blog skylab and I had been having a rambling discussion in a single thread. Most recently the subject of digital photography came up, and after that that skylab created a pair of photo albums. It's such a complex and wide ranging subject that I felt a new thread should be opened. This is that thread.     skylab,   I hear you regarding the benefits of no film. I too shoot my head off because in the digital world the "film" costs almost nothing if you have a high capacity image captu

Denver Heat Wave -- Not

I don't know whether it's made the US national news but Denver yesterday set a record for the most consecutive days with a high temperature of more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet this is the coolest summer I can remember.   Today, 1 August, will be the first day when it will have gone above 100 F. Normally we will have seen at least one 100+ day by late June. This year it will have happened for the first time today and tomorrow -- in August rather than June, and it won't surprise me if it do

Addon Aircraft Pricing: I Surrender ... Sort Of

For many months I had been saying that under no circumstances would I pay more than USD $30 for a payware addon aircraft. Well, like a politician running for office (any political party) my position has ... er ... evolved ...   ... As in "I never said it. But if I said it, it didn't mean what it means. And anyway it was taken out of context, even though what was quoted was a complete sentence. And in point of fact I've been saying exactly the opposite all the time." :D   ... Ahem ...   I'm n

My Wife The MICU Nurse

Six years ago my wife was hired as a project manager by Transgenomic here in Denver, a leading maker of DNA sequencing equipment. She was fired because she insisted on prioritizing her group's work whereas management wanted everything done all at once, an impossible task. Somebody had to take the fall for the system that customers were hardly able to use, the system that was built and shipped before she arrived. She was elected, simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. And it hurt because sh

AirBoss (TM) Product Description

Yesterday I told Johann Dees that I would do a blog about the capabilities of AirBoss. This is that post ...   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   AirBoss is a human interface utility. Its original intent was to serve as a "joystick enhancer" as discussed below, though it has been extended in certain ways so as to do important things for keyboard-based shooter/slasher games, that product variant being known as GameBoss. I’m not going to speak further about GameBoss other than to mention that, among other t

System Programming Is A Nine To Five Job

Nine AM to five AM. :D It has ever been so because there is no other way to design and build complex technical software.   I don't recall whether it was the OS team at Microsoft or Apple, but it doesn't matter. They had T-shirts that read "Working 80 Hours A Week And Loving It".   Well, when I was a young system programmer I worked roughly 14x7 or roughly 100 hours per week. The degree of concentration required to have multiple people design and build a complex piece of software requires that

A Blog A Day Keeps The Doctor At Bay

For the vast majority of you, Flight Simulator is a hobby. These days, because of my involvement with both the FS Flight Training joint venture with FlightSim.com, and with AirBoss, FS is now more of a business for me than a source of recreation.   Most of what I do in FS these is test flying, sometimes with students but usually on my own as I work on both shaping our approach to training, and on refining the human factors of using AirBoss.   So where do I do my test flying? Well, out of Color

The Urge To Write

Most writers take pleasure in the act of writing. A known readership is nice but at least for me the risk that somebody might actually read my stuff is reward enough.   I often write for audiences of one as various email friends will attest. While I certainly can't put myself in his league, T.S. Eliot did the same thing with poetry. In fact, "Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats", http://coral.lili.uni-bielefeld.de/Classes/Summer97/SemGS/WebLex/OldPossum/oldpossumlex/ is simply a collection of c

Per The Immortal JB In "Sex Machine", I'm Back!!!

Well now. Blogs ...   This is a great idea because I like to think out loud (in writing :)) and blogs are terrific for this. I like this idea so much that I may even steer clear of Outer Marker :D. We shall see what we shall see.   Anyway, Like many active forum members I have both supporters and detractors. This is because I refuse to make insipid posts. You know the kind I mean. The short posts that say only things like "That's nice" or "Gee, I'll have to try that" or "Thanks for sharing". P
