    Addon Scenery for FSX/FSX-SE - Module 6: Americanbase_Hythe
By Barrie Semmens : FlightSem Software (c) 2013-2024

RAF Hythe was originally a Royal Air Force base situated in Hythe, Hampshire, 10 miles South of Southampton on the Southern side of Southampton Water and some 500 yards East of Hythe Pier. The site was acquired by the South East England Development Agency in October, 2007. It has since been developed into ‘Hythe Marine Park’, home to a number of maritime and marine production facilities.
From 1967 the facilities were used mainly for small boat repairs by the US Field Army Support Brigade/Combat Equipment Battalion-Hythe. At this time, the base became known as RAF (Hythe) American Base as it had been operated by the American Army since 1960; its function was to service and maintain watercraft. The base, the last U.S. Army installation in the United Kingdom, closed on the 30th September, 2006 after the American Army left following a cost-cutting exercise.

FlightSem Software (FSS) Addon Scenery for FSX - Module 1: Calshot Spit.

Scenery Module 1: Calshot Spit enhances the default scenery of the area situated at the mouth of Southampton Water in the United Kingdom which marks the entrance to the Solent. Calshot Spit, with its Coastguard radar tower and mote Tutor Castle, was the original home to the famous Sunderland flying boat and one of the chosen sites for 'The Jacques Schneider Maritime Trophy' Air Races held in the 1920's. Its unique position provides spectacular views across the shores of the Solent and supports one of the country's most popular watersport locations. Further along from the Activities Centre are Houston, Keymer and Lawrence houses, while wooden beach huts can be seen strung along the shingle-beach - Luttrell’s Tower is visible in the distance.

    Important:

    1. Please be aware that this scenery will not work with FS2004 (FS9) or with earlier versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. In addition, this Software Product may not perform well on low specification computer systems; ideally it requires at least a multi-core CPU system e.g. Intel i5 or i7.

    2. Calshot Spit (UK) has not been tested with ‘Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition’ (FSX-SE) or Prepar3D (P3D) but is known to work, or should work, OK, provided the correct installing pathways have been stipulated during installation of the software.

    3. The scenery is compatible with ‘REX Essential + Overdrive – High Definition Environmental and Weather’, ‘Flight1 Ground Environment – Europe’ (GEX-Europe) and ‘Ultimate Terrain X – Europe (UTX – Europe) software packages. Other off-the-shelf support packages such as ‘VFR Photographic Scenery-Generation X’ and similar commercial software upgrades have not been tested and may not therefore be compatible or blend seamlessly with this Software Product.

    4. This FSS Software Package is not an addon scenery product for the new ‘Microsoft Flight Simulator (MFS 2020)’ released into the public domain by Microsoft in 2020.

FlightSem Software (FSS) Addon Scenery for FSX - Module 4: Netley Chapel, Castle & Abbey

Scenery Module 4: After the Crimean war, Queen Victoria ordered a Military Hospital to be built in the UK. Its purpose was to train army nurses and doctors and to treat military patients to ensure their swift return to duty. Netley was chosen as the site because it was near to Southampton so that hospital ships from around the British Empire could safely dock and disembark patients. For over 100 years the site was a great military hospital, housing wounded troops of many nationalities from the 1914-1918 Great War. Close by is Netley Castle, one of King Henry VIII’s Southern Coastal artillery forts built to defend Southampton Water from a French attack and possible invasion. Between 1939 and 1998 the property was converted into private housing and used as a nursing home. The castle, surrounded by approximately 3.8 acres of woodland, is once again a private residential home, but sadly is closed to the public, despite being visible from Southampton Water and accessible by land and sea. Within walking distance is Netley Abbey, from which the village got its name, and is the most complete Cistercian monastery in southern England. It originated when a colony of monks of the Cistercian Order crossed Southampton Water from Beaulieu to establish a new religious house at Netley in 1239. Set along the wild, wooded slopes above Southampton Water, the Abbey appears to be the perfect medieval ruin. Almost all of the walls of the 13th century church still stands today.

Fawley (Exxon) Oil Refinery Scenery for FSX/FSX-SE.
Fawley (Exxon) Oil Refinery site covers some 13 square kilometers (3,250 acre complex) and is situated on Southampton Water, some 5 miles by road from Hythe village in Hampshire (UK). On the seaward side of the complex lie the salt marshes, whilst on the landward side an extensive tree screen surrounds one of the biggest and most complex oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing sites in Europe, namely, 'Esso Petroleum Company & Exxon Mobile Chemical Limited’. The refinery imports crude oil from around the world, including the Middle East and Russia, although the majority of the crude oil comes from the North Sea. The oil is off-loaded at the Refinery's Marine Terminal (Module 2) the largest in Europe. Its mile long jetty handles some 2,500 ships movements a year. The refinery stacks can be seen for miles around. Thirty years ago there was a permanent flame over Fawley – the 'Fawley Flame' – but is now a comparatively rare event. The refinery's flares are a normal and vital part of keeping the refinery running safely and works in the same way as a home gas heater – a pilot light burns constantly igniting any gas that is sent to a flare.

  19. FAGM Rand Airport

Construction of Rand Airport (FAGM) was started in 1920 and completed in 1931 and it was originally opened as an International Airport to the City of Germiston. The main terminal was designed to resemble an aeroplane when seen from the air.

The airport served as South Africa’s main international airport until 1948 when due to the development in international travel and the increase in passenger numbers, the runways could not accommodate the bigger aircraft.

Rand Airport was privatized in October 2000, but it still is a busy airport and provides facilities for private and commercial ventures and houses adequate facilities for the full spectrum of aviation-related requirements.

  23. FALE King Shaka Intl Airport

King Shaka International Airport (FALE) is located 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the City of Durban. The airport was conceptualized in the 1960’s when it was realized that the old Louis Botha/Durban International airport (FADN), to the south of Durban, would soon reach its capacity.

Construction began in 1973 and by 1975 the earthworks and a storm drainage system to the value of R320 million were completed. By 1982, the project was halted due to economic slowdown. A local Micro light club made use of the grassed over runway. The new airport was named La Mercy Airport (FALE) after the town of La Mercy located five kilometers east of the airport. Construction recommenced on the 24 August 2007 and the new airport was opened on the 1st of May 2010.

  24. FAOR Johannesburg International Airport

Opened in 1952, Johannesburg / OR Tambo International Airport (FAOR) is the largest airport in South Africa, and the busiest. It is also a major gateway for tourist traffic and located 24 kilometers (15 mi) from the Johannesburg city center.

OR Tambo International Airport is bordered by the suburbs of Alberton, Brakpan, Germiston and Kempton Park. It was established in 1952 as the Jan Smuts International Airport, named after Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts, who was the Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 to 1924 and from 1939 to 1948 as well as a staunch opposer of “Apartheid”.

In 2006 the airport was renamed to OR (Oliver Reginald) Tambo International Airport, after the former president of the African National Congress (ANC), hence the change in the Airport ID from FAJS to FAOR.

  25. FAPE Port Elizabeth Intl Airport

Port Elizabeth Airport (FAPE) was established in 1929 by Colonel Allister Mackintosh Miller who needed an airport from which to operate his postal service between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Since then, the airport has seen many upgrades. The last upgrade was performed in 2004 when the terminal was upgraded to provide for international travellers.

Over 118 custom made objects brings this airport to life like no other package can! For those who have visited Port Elizabeth Airport before will immediately recognize the airport layout. This package is as true to live as it is possible to achieve!
    ----------
Since we have decided to discontinue development of airport scenery for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX), we are now making this package available to the community. We are releasing this package under the Creative Commons License which means that you are free to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon this package, as long as attribution is given to the original creator. Under no circumstances may this package be sold for money, but you are free to update this package if you wish to do so.

We do not offer any support for this scenery. You download, install and use this scenery entirely on your own.

THE SCENERY LIBRARIES THAT ARE INCLUDED ARE REQUIRED!
Please install the main scenery file first and then download and install either the FSX-LIBFIXV1.7.5 or the FSX_SE-LIBFIXV1.7.5 depending on the version of Flight Simulator X you have.
The file named FSX-LIBFIXV1.7.5 is for the default version of FSX.
The file named FSX_SE-LIBFIXV1.7.5 is for the Steam version of FSX.
    Please install only one.
