About This File

FS2004 Scenery--Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, Canada. Gjoa Haven is a village of 1200 or so inhabitants at N 68 38 W 95 51 on the southeast corner of King William Island, around 155 miles (250 km) north of the Arctic Circle. Its Inuit name is Uqsuqtuuq, which means approximately "plenty of fat"; this is a reference to the plentiful whales with their supply of blubber. The Gjoa Haven name was given by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen when he spent two years there from 1903 to 1905 during his exploration of the northwest passage from east to west. The village (again) does not feature in FS2004 but is included in this scenery with approximately the right shape. The airfield runway is 4400 feet of gravel 100 feet wide at 154 feet above sea level, and there is no LL100 available, only JetA1, delivered once a year by ship along with all the other requirements of the town. The nearby CAM-B remotely operated defense radar station is included, as are both new and old terminal buildings. By Roger Wensley.
