About This File

FSX RAF McDonnell Phantom F-4K 111 Sqdn Black Mike. This is a repaint of the payware Milviz F-4J/S Phantom to represent F.G.1 XV582 (M) 'Black Mike' of No. 111 Squadron, RAF, based at RAF Leuchars till retirement in 1992. Initially delivered to the Royal Navy, it was transferred to the RAF in 1978 and first issued to the Phantom conversion unit 228 OCU at RAF Wattisham. Subsequently it was re-issued to No. 111 Squadron at RAF Leuchars and was the first RAF Phantom to clock 5000 flying hours. It was painted black in 1989 for static exhibition purposes, to commemorate 111 Sqdn's time in the early 1960's as the RAF's aerobatic team - the Black Arrows. However, such was the interest in the aircraft at air shows, it was flown regularly up until the unit converted to the Tornado F.3 in 1992. Subsequently it was used as an instructional airframe at RAF Leuchars until the closure of the base in 2014. Being in remarkably good condition and near-complete, efforts have been made to fund its rescue and removal to Bruntingthorpe and the possibility of returning it to taxiing condition. By Dave Quincey.
