Rupert
Back in the 60's we did several cross country navigation hops to Palm Springs. It taught newbies how to "Scud Run" under the smog whilst not hitting the mountains. We did that in I Corp Nam a lot, but their it was usually clouds during monsoon season, not smog. The usual route to Palm Springs involved flying over the Grape Vine, following the valleys while fighting the high heat and high headwinds (called the "Santa Anas") coming off the desert. Indicating 110 or so knots, we'd often have such a low speed over ground that traffic on the freeway passed us!!?? Once when I was on that run the winds were so bad we had to turn around and return to base to refuel and wait for the next morning hoping for less head winds. We actually had negative (backwards) speed over ground while indicating 110 Knots air speed. Click on the pictures for some captions.'
