  1. I played dear old FSX for many years but drifted into wargaming for the past few years. I want to get back into flight simming and just wonder which are the latest super-duper ones nowadays that you can recommend? My PC is high endish so no worries there..:) Thanks
  2. YES!! If we buy games/sims from Steam they usually do no-quibble refunds provided we haven't played it (or tried to get it working) for more than 2 hours; I can vouch for that because I got a refund on a flight sim last year..:)
  3. Sorry I can't find a Tech help section so i'll try my luck here..:) This below is my NVidia resolution option screen and I use the highlighted reso for all my games and sims and it seems to work fine. But why are the top five in their own 'Ultra' group separate from the 'PC' group? My only concern is that by using an 'Ultra', I might be putting too much of a strain on my PC, leading to possible overheating problems or something, what do you guys think? And what does 'Ultra' mean exactly? Thanks, answers on a postcard please..:) -------------------------------------------
  4. Thanks mate, I've been away doing all my flying in the Armed Assault III multiplayer servers for a couple of years, I specialise in transporting my human troops around in my Blackfish (Osprey), it's a beast to fly and only a few players are - ahem- skilled enough to handle it. And as a longtime wargamer I kinda enjoy dodging flak and missiles..:)
  5. Hi guys I've been sidetracked in wargames for a year or two but now I hear MSFS 2020 has just been released, so can I ask a stupid question- shall I buy it from Steam or somewhere else? From past experience I know that Steam download times can be horrendously long so I'd prefer to buy it from somewhere else with a faster d/l time if possible, any recommendations?
  6. I'm a total PC dummy and only know how to waggle my joystick to make my little planes go WHEEH! so it's no use asking me (sniffle). All I know is that I solved all my simming problems years ago when I bought FSX and a super-duper PC to play it..:)
  7. I've never tried it, but I think air racing against other people would be fun...:)

  9. Hi, I live in the UK too, what are your favourite UK addons? At the moment all I've got is southern england photoscenery.
  10. I've never owned P3D, so as a matter of interest can you tell us what (if anything) makes it better than FSX? I had X-Plane 10 last year but didn't keep it, so as a matter of interest can you tell us if they've finally fixed the longstanding bug that made single-engine prop planes slowly develop a roll as if they've got no natural stability, as no amount of careful trimming would make the wings stay level.
  11. Incidentally when we emulate flights we have to emulate the weather conditions too but they're not always known. For example as Earheart approached Howland all we know for sure is that she was heading into the rising sun. If there was haze about, the island was probably hidden in the glare especially if clouds were floating around too, and she could have missed seeing it by just a few miles. And we don't know what winds she encountered earlier that may have shifted her off course.
  12. I'm retired, and computing is my RW, nothing else matters..:) I never married because I never wanted to be a family man or have noisy smelly kids, it's bad enough when my nieces visit me with their toddlers and I have to go through the usual checklist before they arrive- Hide all sharp objects to stop getting stabbed in the leg again. Hide scissors to stop my computer wiring being cut through. Hide pencils and pens to stop them scrawling on my walls and books. Remove everything from the fridge temporarily and put it on a high shelf so they can't sling eggs around or empty milk on the floor. When they arrive sit in a hardback chair to protect my kidneys from karate kicks and punches. Hide my computer and monitor to stop them pounding on the keys and leaving greasy fingerprints on the screen. In fact the situation's got so bad just lately that I've stopped answering the door when they turn up, and lie low til they've gone..:)
  13. All I know is that there used to be some Rick Piper models at Skysim, but I hear he's now uploaded them to here- http://www.cbfsim.co.uk/CBFS_HOME.php and he was talking to people in their forum in June 2016, (scroll down to the 7th post) so he's still around if you want to register there and talk to him about what happened to all the Skysim stuff- http://www.cbfsim.co.uk/cbfs_bb/search.php?keywords=rick+piper&sid=35f865d351ddbee418c1c6f881127711
  14. Fascinating, but what messed you up? I just ran a File Search and found these two CH46's for FSX but I couldn't find a CH-43 for FSX. ----------------------------------------------- However I found these two CH-43's for FS2004, but they're called by the British name 'Wessex'-
  15. What did you do in Nam mate? One of my favourites planes is the Skyraider, here's an FS2004/FSX freeware one which I've got- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-carrier-A1-b_zps2cf912ed.jpg~original And here's a real one in action in 1966- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub1/nam-66.jpg
  16. Apart from leaving comments in the downloads comments boxes, we could also make a donation to the freeware creator if he tells us in the Readme how to donate, such as by Paypal or whatever.
  17. At the opposite extreme of glider size is this freeware Messerschmitt Me 321 'Gigant' glider at 180 ft wingspan, I can't remember if it's FS2004, but it flies fine in FSX..:)- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/CMSF/FSX-gigant.gif More posts and screenshots of gliders, thermals, towing etc in this thread on pages 3,4,5,6,8
  18. Some great ideas there cw5301, good luck in Nam..:) Charlie vs US air- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Photos/CharlievUSAF.jpg US air vs Charlie- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Photos/F-4-bomb.jpg You've probably already seen the index to this thread on page 42, but just to remind members, here are some interesting flights for possible recreation- p5- Earhart's last flight. p8- California to Hawaii Dole air race. p25-Flight 19 final flight route. p34- Kingsford Smith trans-Pacific flight. PS- Regarding Earhart, there are plenty of theories, my reading is she was flying into the rising sun as she approached Howland, so if there was any haze about she could have flown past the island by just a few miles without seeing it in the glare. Baker island is 43 miles to the SSE so I supposed there's a possibility she could have stumbled on it and landed/crashlanded/ditched there, but Gardner is a whopping 405 miles SSE from Howland and I can't envisage a scenario that would put her right down there, but then I'm not a real-world pilot so what the heck do I know..:) PS- what do you make of the loss of Flight 19? My take is that the flight leader saw some islands that were dead ringers for the Florida keys 100 miles away which made him become fixated with the erroneous belief that he was over the keys and that his compass was seriously off and he became totally disoriented from that point on.
  19. The willdlife might object to having their peace disturbed..;)
  20. Not sure I know what you're looking for, but I googled "fsx airports google earth" and a dozen or so hits came up which you might want to rummage through.
  21. HELSINKI to MOSCOW Mathias Rust risked his neck to do the unauthorised flight in his Cessna 172 in 1987, annoying the Russians by landing in Red Square; we can try it in FSX with zero risk..:)- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/MathiasRust1987_zpsvnccqbps.jpg~original FULL WRITEUP HERE- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathias_Rust

  23. HOT STUFF If you select the "Engine stress damages engine" option you'll notice the engines of some FSX default planes will start to splutter, lose RPM and belch flames and smoke from under the cowling. The default Mustang racers are notoriously touchy in that respect, here's one in trouble a couple of minutes after I slammed open the throtlle to take off- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-engine%20fire_zpscfz83fhi.jpg~original So to eliminate the risk of engine fire, de-select the option on this screen- http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-Airc-realism.gif~original Or you could leave the option selected if you want the challenge of nursemaiding the engine to stop it blowing a gasket, more about how to do it in this thread- https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?298709-What-s-Up-With-The-FSX-P-51D The professionals- Mustang pilots in England in WW2- http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewforum&f=92
  24. I've never flown an r/c heli but I used to fly r/c planes many years ago, their wreckage is all over the countryside, then computers came along and I bought my first flight sim for the Spectrum in 1983 and have stuck with sims ever since on a variety of comps over the years..:) Here are some heli posts that might interest you- HELIPADS at TOKYO HOTEL, NY and OILRIG https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?248567-How-do-you-keep-FSX-interesting/page18 HILLER H-23 RAVEN https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?248567-How-do-you-keep-FSX-interesting/page32 HELI SIM DEVOTEES http://www.hovercontrol.com/
