  1. All of a sudden, I find that everything in my 2004 is locked in Read-Only mode. I go through the steps to "uncheck" and apply, but when I click on OK...it jumps back onto read-only. I can't seem to get it to turn the read-only mode off!!! Has anybody encountered this situation and solved it? This is really frustrating to say the least!! Could there be something outside FS9 controlling it??? JonB
  2. Many thanks for your response from the great "land down under", Dorian. I managed to get it working. Really don't care much for Win 11. Getting used to Win 10 was enough of a bother, and now this..thing! Do wish they would leave things alone when they work. Oh well, no sense grumbling!! Appreciate your help! Thanks again. JonB
  3. What's the trick to get FS9 to open and load in Windows 11? It runs fine on my desktop at home and did so on my traveling laptop too, both with Win 10, but I had to replace my old laptop and the new one has Windows 11. I'm in a hotel away from home trying to get FS9 to run. I installed it under a separate folder like most have learned to do, and managed to get the opening window to show but it just won't load. I remember we had to do something after installing FS9 on Win 10 to get it to function properly, but I can't remember what that was. Any advice ? I'm stuck! JonB
  4. Well hello there Mr. Zippy! Nice to hear from you again. Thanks for coming to my rescue once again!! I understand your responses and they put me a little more at ease with FSX-SE. I'm a bit confused by some of the differences between it and the older disk version. Am intrigued by your use of a "Hangar" folder to store unwanted aircraft. Where do you keep it and when you want to remove an aircraft do you move the entire acft file from the airplane folder to the Hangar folder or just the .cfg or one of the other files, just enough so that it doesn't show but can be easily restored? I seldom fly the default missions. I normally use FSX for IFR currency practice and sometimes make up my own "mission". So many of the defaults are just taking up spaced and memory. Another question if I may. With the disk version, I used to make backup copies of the entire Flight Simulator X folder...just in case. So do you backup your SE folder? If so, how? I will be adding some non-steam acft and scenery and don't want to lose them entirely if SE ever acts up like the old disk version did on occasion. JonB :) PS just found the DLC folder. What's that all about and what does DLC stand for, do you know?
  5. Need more help with FSX-SE. I’m still discovering just how different FSX-SE is from the orig. boxed edition. Turns out my learning curve is much steeper than I anticipated. I’m hoping that some of you more knowledgeable gents can help me out once more with a few more basic questions. After downloading FSX-SE I finally found it under C:STEAM> steamapps> common> FSX, not under C:Drive where the disk version is normally installed. Is that where it is supposed to be? I bought 2 FSX-SE acft add-ons from the Steam Store which installed them automatically. They show up when I open FSX-SE, but I can’t find their files. Don’t see them in SimObjects where the default acft. are located. What happens to Steam add-on files? Where does Steam install them? What about installing add-ons created for FSX disk version into FSX-SE? If they come with an installer, will it install them in the Steam version, or do you have to place them manually? If so…. Where do non-steam add-on aircraft go…into SimObejts> Aircraft , gauges, etc. ? Also, What about non-steam scenery add-ons. Where do they go? New Subject: I won’t be needing/using many of the default aircraft like the helicopters, sailplanes, aerobatics and others. Essentially, I don’t want/need all the aircraft FSX gives me. Is there an easy way to removing them from the Aircraft roster just so they won’t always have to see them when I go to pick an aircraft? JonB
  6. Thanks so much Tim. I think I have a pretty good handle on this Steam version now thanks to your help. :) One last thought just crossed my mind: can I (or how can I) have two SEs installed on my computer? One I would use just for the IFR practice....no addons. The other with addon acft, scenery etc....a sort of "play" version. Of course I wouldn't run both at the same time. Is such a thing possible? JonB
  7. Gentlemen: I can't thank you enough for your extraordinary and detailed responses. You cleared up nearly every concern I had about FSX Stream. Also I must beg your forgivnes for this delayed response. Seems my longtime membership had a glich and locked me out for several days, but Nels cleared it up for me \ Long story short...I went ahead & obtained FSX SE from Steam and downloaded it successfuly. It works fine: looks the same just as you said, but it sure is a different creature from the disk set! Aside from the setup process there must be many other differences to discover. So, if I may impose upon you; I have some new questions. 1. Steam buried it under C: Steam > steamapps > common> FSX. My question to you is..can it be safely relocated (moved) to C: FSXSE where my old old FSX and current FS9 are located? Or does the steam version have to remain buried? 2. Backups: How do you backup the FSX SE folder. Defintely leared my lesso about backing up "just in case". 3. Reinstalling: If you have to reinstall FSX SE, I understand you can download a virgin copy from Steam. But once it is 'reinstalled', can you then copy over it with your backup and have all your add-ons and changes back in play? Or do you have to add them again, one-at-a-time? 4. Add-ons: Is the procedure for adding aircraft to the SE version about the same as for the disk version; or is there some complex process? i.e. I mean are the add-on aircraft files installed elsewhere, or under SimObjedts>airplanes? (like you do with add-ons in FSX [disk]. 5. Can I remove some of the default aircraft which I wil never use? (I use FSX with an add-on GPS app from Mindstar Avn primarily to practice IFR approaches. I have to keep my IFR skills current for my job and it helps to practice the procedures siting a home. (uses less fuel, too) I still have FS9 for fun sim-flying! 6. Any other FSX SE pitfalls I will need to know? I would be most grateful for any help and/or advice you can think of. That's the kind of 'stuff' that makes this forum and this 'hobby/pastime/passion' so interesting. Otherwise I suspect many simmers would have given it up long ago and sought a more exciting pastime....bowling, perhaps? Thanks again! JonB :)
  8. Thanks for the reply, Tim. Trying to send you a PM. First time doing it, so I hope it comes through! JonB
  9. Seriously thinking of switch from FSX (disks) to the Steam Version. Some swear by it while others swear and hate it, so I’m not sure it would be a wise move. Is it even a Microsoft product? If anyone can help me with some questions I would be eternally grateful ‘cause, I’ve only heard a few things but I know absolutely nothing about ‘Steam’. Is it an online version of FSX (something like Office 365) or does it come on disks in a box? Does it work with Windows 10? I’ve heard that installation is quite complicated with lots of separate steps, unlike disks. Is that so? Is there an activation process? Can you install it on multiple computers? Does it match FSX? i.e. operation, speed, details, scenery density etc. What about add-ons like aircraft, scenery, buildings etc? What does…you have to have a “Steam Account” mean? Can you still get the FSX version today? Where can you find it and how do you buy it… through a store, online vendor, eBay? JonB

  11. Got it. Thanks!! PM reply is on its way. JonB
  12. Thanks Chris, I appreciate the info, especially about EZ-Scenery because, as luck would have it, I found an EZ-Scenery .exe file buried in one of my backup disks. I can't recall how I came by it. If I bought it from Abacus some years ago, I no longer have any registration/serial numbers or proof of purchase 'stuff' saved anywhere. Wondering if I'll need any of them to install and make use of the app. Haven't tried it yet. Am curious to know exactly what you meant about having to re-enter your registration info. Is it something Abacus gave you when you first bought the program? JonB
  13. Thanks for the responses, gents. Have heard that IS3 caught a virus and that's the reason it was discontinued. Don't know if that is true through. I saw some reference to a Instant Scenery 4 and a supposed connection toe Flt Sim 2020. Any truth to that? Does IS4 even exist? Also, Do you know if the EZ Scenery add-on can be found anywhere? I can't even find the Abacus website anymore. Is it gone, too? I had hoped to create more scenery in my old FS9, but the chances of that is looking pretty grim, now. A shame, too! Time changes everything, but in this case, not for the good!!!. JonB
  14. Wondering what is the status of the Instant Scenery add-on scenery now...September 2021? Are there any alternative scenery add-on available? Been away from Flt Sim for a couple of years and would like to continue some of my old FS9 scenery projects. Can anyone bring me up to date? Would appreciate it greatly. JonB
  15. My question is this: can you make up our own checkklists and/or reference sheets in FSX? (I mean the ones you call up with Shift +F10.) If not, is it possible to edit the existing wordy ones down to essential items, like flap settings, approach speeds, etc?. JonB
  16. Your second suggestion was the key...."restore default settings". That did it. So simple...wish I had thought of it. Will definitely make a note to myself so that if and when I it happens again, I won't have to hunt around for the answer!!!! Thanks for the tip Alan...really appreciate it! JonB :) PS You do have to reset all your controller commands afterwards, though.
  17. Struggling through a re-install of Fs9 and have some small issues to solve. a. Used to use the "W" key command to cycle the instrument panel through three views; (1) full panel, (2) no panel, just the primary instruments and a larger forward view. (useful when taxiing tail draggers), and (3) full view with no instruments showing. Another click of the "W" key and you were back to the full panel view again. After re-install this handy feature doesn't work. Anyone know how to restore it? B. Another handy feature for tail-draggers was the ability to raise the horizon so you can see the taxiway and runway surfaces through the front window of say a DC-3 or B-17 while taxiing or during takeoff. I think the commands to do this was something like Shift + Backspace or Shift+Enter. ou cold aise and lower the horizon this way. Anyhow this also no longer works after reinstall. Anyone know how to restore this feature? Would appreciate any advice or suggestions...I'm at a loss. JonB
  18. With a hint from an earlier thread on the subject of "Undock", I think I've solved the aforementioned problems with the "ALT" menu, black screen and the greyed-out "Undock" command. And it turns out to be very simple! For example: Set up a flight & open it; hit the "Alt" button to bring up the menu banner at the top; go to "Views" and un-click "Full Screen". That's all. The view stays on with the menu bar at the top. Now, pick any one of the sub-windows like GPS, Radio Stack, Throttle Quadrant, etc. and bring it up. Slide your curser to the top of the sub-window and a little window appears. In it the "Undock" is no longer greyed-out. So, click it and you can now move the window to a second monitor. It works! Mystery solved! I think I should have discovered this back when I bought a second monitor just so I could "Undock" some instruments and move them to the new monitor where they are easier to refer to in flight....especially when practicing instrument approaches when your eyes are the busiest. Gotta make a note of this for future reference if/when I have to reinstall Fs9 again. JonB :D
  19. Opps...that's one I missed. Added it in and Fs9 finally opened. Many thanks for the reminder!! However I notice that the default install is doing a couple of odd things that the corrupted version started doing: for instance... a. Click on ALT for the top line menu banner and the view turns black. The menu should stay on at the top and the view remains open. For example; hit the ALT button and the view goes black. Click on a menu command and the view returns but the Alt menu disappears. Any way to control that? b. If I want to move things like the GPS or Throttle Quadrant or a second view to a 2nd monitor screen I can't 'cause the "Undock" command line is greyed out. Do you know how to activate it? BTW Never experienced any of these 'glitches' with the pre-corruption FS-9. And FSX runs normally so something is effecting FS-9. Any thoughts? I really appeciate your response and help. Thanks again JSMR! JonB
  20. Reinstalled fresh Fs9 into Windows 10. Worked for years before, but this one won't open. Installed in both C & D drives...makes no difference. Starts to open then just stops cold. Tried all the recommended compatibility settings for Win10 with no difference. This Fs9 acts as if I have forgotten a step or two. Is there something I should have turned on or something I should have turned off? FSX has been running on the same Win10 Cptr without a hitch. I think it was just Fs9 that corrupted itself during a 'save' operation, and not Win10 itself. Anyone have any ideas? I'm' really stuck on this one!!!. JonB
  21. Well, nevermind. EZ Scenery is the answer. The only one available on todays' market, as far as I can determine, is EZ Scenery from ABACUS. I believe it preceeded Instant Scenery, but now that Flight1 has decided to abandon their object placing app (which was far more user friendly as far as I can tell) EZ Scenery is the only one left that will do the job. So I went to their website (Flight1) and bought it. Hardly any instructions as it's supposed to be intuitive: not quite but not impossible to learn. In the end I have answered my own question, and maybe this will be of some help to others who want to populate an airport or airfield with bldgs, greenery, vehicles, figures, etc. JonB :)
  22. Have lots of scenery objects and a good many acft objects created with the SAMM program which all worked well with IS3. Used it for years with Flt Sim 9, but after re-installing Windows 10, IS3 refused to open and only gave me the nasty "Invalid License" msg. Wouldn't re-install either; tried buying a new copy from the website but it has a virus embedded in the download file and can't install; Flight1 stopped responding to queries about IS3 long ago and won't even answer the phone anymore  (so to speak). I'm stuck and need something else. Last Forum entries on this subject were long ago. Maybe new stuff is available to replace IS3 by now. Don't know. If nothing new, What will work with FS9 and where can I find it? Any help out there? JonB
  23. Question: What do I have to do to turn one aircraft, say a T-34 trainer, into several; each with its own call numbers? I have made Luke Fireld into a traininhg base circa the 1950s and want to create a training flight departeure of three or four T-34s at say 0930. So what do I do to make three or four copies with their own individual call numbers so that I can give them an AI Flight plan that has them calling Ground control for taxi instructions one after the other at 0930 (each with a different ID number)? I will then taxi out behind them for take off in the original T-34 When airborne I'll break off for my own airwork training. and they can go on to their AI field. Looking for the near-realism of a multi-flight takeoff. I tried a couple of times but could only get FS9 to load one AI T-34. What are the steps required? JonB
  24. It Worked!!!! Both tips worked. Tailwheel swivels like it should--no more diferential braking. I found I already had fx-b17maxstartup in my main effects folder so I just replaced the startup smoke with one in my B-17E and now I get more smoke than I bargained for. Looks great! As I guy who grew up with piston engines, I truly love the smoke, noise and blur of turning props of a radial engine startup and even the pop and crackle of a Merlin'e exhaust when you throttle back for landing. For a true lover it's almost enough to make you wet your pants in excitement!!! This model is acting better and better...thanks to your knowledge of how things work. The model itself looks pretty darn good in spite of a few minor things like the oversized windows, twin 50s in the belly 'bathtub' (only had a single one), lack of working exits and teardrop gun blisters which are a little small and placed too high. Can't do anything about those at this point but it's the best available in FS9. Now am looking forward to setting up a flight of Ds and Es departing Hamilton Field at dusk for Hawaii on December 6th, 1941. I'll be in the player "D" which I'll call the "Mary Ann" after the 1943 star of the "Air Force" movie, a B model converted to C configuration which was used throughout the film. Went on a bond drive tour after the filming then assigned to crew training until scrapped at the end of the war. There's only one "D" model left today, the "Swoose" which is undergoing restoration at the Air Force Museum in Dayton. I hope to see her on display someday. She will seem so much smaller than her sister E model "Memphis Belle" which was longer and a bit bigger. Anyway, I'm happy with what i now have and want to thank you again for all your help. I would have given up on it, otherwise. Thanks again Zippy and a very Happy, & healthy New Year to you!! JonB
  25. Thanks for the response Zippy. I followed your advice; made changes to the torque like you did and got the props to turn after upping the torque to 0.5000 but the engines wouldn't start, just props turning and dying to a stop. Got frustrated and copied over the "piston engine" and "prop" segmets from a FDG Donationware B-17E..and they started up and ran normally! Surprise, surprise, I didn't think it would work!! I have two other annoying things about this model I wish I could correct ..one is the smoke on startup. those R1820s on B-17 really put out the smoke on startup...mainly from oil that collects at the bottom of the cylinders after standing for a couple of hours. That's why they had to pull the props through by hand before starting, to try to suck some of the oil out, but could never get it all. Hence all that impressive startup smoke! Do you happen to know what controls the startup smoke smoke on sim models? The other thing lacking on this D model is a controlable tailwheel. You have to use differential breaking and it's a pain in the butt, to say the least!! You know one helluva lot more then me about these sim models so let me ask...do you think there is a way to change the fixed tail wheel to a steerable one? I have no idea at all!! Once again you have saved my 'bacon," so to speak, and I"m very gratefull for the time and effort you have taken to help me out! Many thanks again, and since I'm writing this on Christmas Eve...let me wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year!!! JonB
