  1. Care to back that statment up. It has long been known the Ground scenery shadow checkbox, when enabled will cause unpredictable shadows, its just another one of those things that were buggered in FSX. Does not matter DX9 or DX10. For the most part you might not see irregularities with GSS enabled for most default airfields but the problem becomes apparent with custom scenery and objects.
  2. Hi NimbleCat, Does your picture show both issues or only the shadow issue. The tall shadows could be a result of having the "Ground Scenery Shadows" checkbox checked. This box should never be enabled because of unpredictable shadows emanating from ground scenery objects. Example: The second issue relating to "phasing" or switching between default and custom texture. Does this happen on the runway in a checkerboard fashion, or does the grass beside the runway change to default as the aircraft moves. Could you possibly take a picture of the phenomenon.
  3. Very true Wim, Graphics card should support DX10, but I didn't think there would be any older systems still running pre DX10 cards (as also modern drivers for DX10 support) most modern Graphics support DX9 10 11 12 even if the FSX in-game DX support only needs compatibility for 9 & 10. Wim, you make a very good point.:D
  4. Hi Chp56, Not a button, but a checkbox. Conditional existence based on Service pack & or Acceleration Pack.
  5. Hi Hossfly, I took a few pictures from KBFM Brookley Downtown Mobile and Bay area I have no trees or Landclass in the water or in the bay. I don't use UTX or GEX, I am using Orbx FTXGlobalBase and Default FSX for this area of the USA. Pics show modified state with Water poly on slopes and the terrain.cfg state for the 6 entries, and then the FSX default state (Rock) terrain.cfg for those same 6 entries. You will notice also that in my Default state pics there is still a slight water poly on the slope for Rwy32 Mostly (rock) but not nearly as much as when the _0 is applied (Water on slope). Did you use the modified Terrain.cfg or just remove the _0 from those 6 entries in the default unmodified terrain.cfg. If you have also Orbx, did you do the sync thingy. Below is an extract from my Modified Terrain.cfg, I also use Orbx with custom entries. Shown are both states for water poly on terrain slope or No water Poly on terrain slope. You would not have both states in the .cfg at the same time for those 6 entries either with _0 (Water) or without (Rock). Below example: Using Modified Terrain.cfg these 6 entries from [Texture.194] to [Texture.199] as installed (Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers, But Water on Slopes) // Hydro Polygons - Default - Perennial [Texture.194] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Default_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={CB2D5672-CCBC-429B-BA43-2EA24E37EF4C} LegacyId=1209 Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE_0 //(Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers but Water on Size=4 FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Bay/Harbor - Perennial [Texture.195] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Bay_Harbor_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={8F1CD843-CAB1-434A-9E78-A6A1DAD4ED2E} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE_0 //(Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers but Water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Lake - Perennial [Texture.196] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Lake_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={BCD5C182-9C8B-4C57-97BD-272CF492CBFF} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE_0 //(Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers & Water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic River - Perennial [Texture.197] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_River_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={E5DD8B66-8E86-4E7E-BE58-6E94A91C8FF0} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE_0 //(Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers but Water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Canal/Channel - Perennial [Texture.198] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Canal_Channel_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={C4E055AB-0855-4D5C-8FB9-3318E1C8AB8A} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE_0 //(Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers but Water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Ocean - Perennial [Texture.199] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={2D103429-89EB-4CB3-A61E-E188E79C77E7} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE_0 //(Modified Terrain.cfg with (_0) No Rocks in rivers but Water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes Default FSX Terrain.cfg - These 6 entries from [Texture.194] to [Texture.199] (FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) // Hydro Polygons - Default - Perennial [Texture.194] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Default_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={CB2D5672-CCBC-429B-BA43-2EA24E37EF4C} LegacyId=1209 Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE //(FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) Size=4 FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Bay/Harbor - Perennial [Texture.195] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Bay_Harbor_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={8F1CD843-CAB1-434A-9E78-A6A1DAD4ED2E} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE //(FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Lake - Perennial [Texture.196] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Lake_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={BCD5C182-9C8B-4C57-97BD-272CF492CBFF} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE //(FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic River - Perennial [Texture.197] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_River_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={E5DD8B66-8E86-4E7E-BE58-6E94A91C8FF0} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE //(FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Canal/Channel - Perennial [Texture.198] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Canal_Channel_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={C4E055AB-0855-4D5C-8FB9-3318E1C8AB8A} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE //(FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes // Hydro Polygons - Generic Ocean - Perennial [Texture.199] Name=Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial Color=FF2938FF guid={2D103429-89EB-4CB3-A61E-E188E79C77E7} Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE //(FSX default -No (_0) Rocks in rivers & No water on Slopes) FlattenMode=slope FlattenPriority=41000 ExcludeAutogen=Yes RenderToTexture=Yes RenderPriority=81000 Water=Yes
  6. Hi Hossfly, Rather than write out the whole answer, howto fix "Hydro Polys climbing slopes". If you hop on over to AVSIM library https://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=&Name=&FileName=fsx_modified_terrain_cfg.zip&Author=&CatID=root There is a full explanation in the fs_x_modified_terrain_cfg.htm supplied with the Adam Szofran, Richard Ludowise and Luis Féliz-Tirado modified terrain.cfg Download the package fsx_modified_terrain_cfg.zip from the avsim link above, read the notes, make a backup of your original Terrain.cfg in fsx installation root folder before using mod cfg or editing with notepad. 1 small caveat: when using the mod .cfg for the first time and before opening FSX where Orbx or any other scenery software mod are installed that add their own custom entries to Terrain.cfg you should always open Orbx Central first to sync (syncing adds those custom entries back into the modified terrain.cfg) and correctly identifies the default texture count. I can't remember if you can just edit the entries in your default Terrain.cfg preserving the present custom entries, or if you need to install the modified one to make these changes effective. There is a side effect to this mod/edit and that is while Hydro Poly water slopes is applied with (_0) you will notice you loose the mid river rock polys smooth water follows the river vector, but gain water polys climbing slopes at a small number of locations on default scenery and mesh. removal of _0 from 6 specific water body definition sections will retain lumps of terrain (rock polys in water on rivers) but loose the Hydro polys climbing slopes. As exampled in the .htm notes.
  7. Hi, Edited: I found the the ("Limited Options" Mission "(Advanced)" Airline Pilot) in my missions folder, which makes some or most of what I wrote below a little pointless, except for Thermals and the visualizations. As this mission uses a B737-800 in a glide to the target over the Indian ocean. However there is no mention of Maui or the use of a glider, so I may still be wrong. Is there an actual name for this mission in the selection panel, I would like to locate it and try it out. I am using FSX Deluxe Gold Acceleration DVD. I'm gonna have a big guess at this one, because I cant find that Limited options Maui mission in my Missions selection panel. But it may be that there are stronger thermals at lower altitude, or you are getting lift from a nearby ridge. A good way to see what thermal you are flying through impacting on the aircraft is to switch on Thermal Visualizations in Customize > Settings>Weather, select "Schematic", when you fly the mission again you will see a large colored coil representing the Thermal (Lowest Yellow, then upward orange, red, dark green, light fading green, to top most thermal altitude where the thermal coil ends). You will also notice the direction of the coil indicates the wind direction as the coil extends upward. Try to also use the variometer if equipped, it will give you a better idea of the strength of your climb through a thermal. The constant beeping can be somewhat annoying but you can hush it with a button push when you are at reasonable altitude and tracking at a reasonable kts. Then re-enable beeps when loosing altitude for unexpected downdraft (look for a nearby thermal to regain altitude).
  8. Uuuh, I don't know:confused:, but somebody needs to stop pressing their nose so hard against the glass, I believe binoculars would help in this situation. For glass repair contact your local shop glass repair center. Fortunately the panes aren't broken. :D
  9. Hello bclarksn, Chuck B, is absolutely correct, all your added airport and default airports are selected using the bulleted option "Search default scenery" these are the ones added to the active Scenery.cfg besides the stock airfields pre existing, and added Scenery Areas. If you know the name of the airfield, city, state, country/region, you can search by name. Or by using the 4digit ICAO code "By airport ID:" in the middle upper options. But always with "Search default scenery" option. @Chuck B Btw... many happy wishes for May, 80 years strong.
  10. Hello alexbreza, The truth is, you cannot change this, the Home screen is now indelibly linked to the Steam-FSinsider webpage, instead of the original FSInsider.com Microsoft webpage. Wether you are running FSX boxed or Steam the Home screen will only link you to steam offerings. Since the original FSInsider info is nolonger accessible for FSX boxed users it would be best not to use the Home screen, the sim will always start on the Freeflight screen as Wim & Zippy have stated. It would also be a good idea to avoid corrupting your sim by ignoring any Steam Edition - Beta branch offerings. The Home page is now useless for FSX Boxed versions.
  11. Hello Dobick, You might like to read the info in Post #2 in this topic https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?320439-Having-trouble-installing-Acceleration-expansion-to-Deluxe&p=2101227#post2101227
  12. Mmmmm, minty fresh! This sometimes works, but mix Toothpaste with water (don't use straight out of the tube) its too gooey and abrasive if not thinned out. Make sure you rinse thoroughly, then make a appointment for 3 monthly checkups, cleaning and fluoride treatment.
  13. Hello BushBrat, What Screen type & resolution are you using. It kinda sounds like you're using the Nvidia DSR (DynamicSuperResolution) for FSX Fullscreen Resolution, you can quickly check this by using (Alt+Enter) into window mode which should be the same as your desktop resolution. Most Flat panels around 24" will be UHD 1080p 1920x1080x32 x 60Hz (Native). or 100Hz or 144Hz if you have one of those G-Sync models. If the text / menu / Shift+z is back to normal in windowed mode then its your FullScreen resolution setting that must be set to a non DSR resolution. Or choose the same native resolution as your desktop in FSX Settings>Graphics tab> FullScreen Resolution - (1920x1080x32) (native UHD). You could also opt not to enable any DSR factor in your Nvidia Control Panel & only use (Native) resolutions for Desktop FSX Windowed and FullScreen modes. An unfortunate side effect of DSR which only works for FullScreen FSX is the shrinking of text fonts, menu & banner text become so small that most can't read. I have found DSR greater than 2.25x DSR factor which is 1080p 2880x1620x32bit DSR 100Hz on my Acer Predator 24" flatpanel, after that the text is too tiny for my old eyes to read. Cheers Jethro
  14. Hi pomak249, Yes I agree, the Modern Blue splashscreen is not very inspiring, more like a blueprint engineering draft, I don't hate it though. The GUI is nice I think, very readable and clean. You could make your own splashscreen (dlgsplash.bmp) for sure, but it might pay you to search for "FSX splash screen" in the libraries around the various sim sites, there are many really nice ones available, some are contained in randomiser packages and some are simple swap small selection, or individual works of art, some just need the filename changed to dlgsplash.bmp and placed in the Uires folder as a direct overwrite or swap. Cheers Jethro
  15. Hello pomak249, As Tim wrote above the "Uires" folder contains all the GUI elements for the FlightSim interface, menus buttons and whatnot from the splashscreen onwards not the flightsim itself (Scenery or aircraft) as Jim posted above his modified splash screen image it is a file called "dlgsplash.bmp" in the Uires folder. There are only a small few FSX GUI Uires where the entire look of the FSX interface has been altered more significantly than a simple splashscreen bitmap swap, a couple come to mind "Sepia theme" changes the standard FSX Uires to an old sepia tone only changing the blue to light tan (Sepia) all buttons and shapes remained standard apart from colour. The other theme was a more modern take on the Blue theme which tried to make the GUI more inline with Win10 type OS GUI, it looked ok but some things were inoperable or replaced with pictorgraphs such as the images used when viewing the available weather themes and season selection images some selection buttons and the font were also changed. I found a couple of GUI themes over at Flyawaysim, but for the sake of my sim stability I decided to remain with the stock FSX GUI Uires as they really don't add anything to the sim beyond the selection and setup screens, although I did replace my dlgsplash.bmp (splash screen image 800x600 pixels) with the fine image below. (Many thanks to its creator - Mauro Carini) https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?searchid=76162156 But you can always find/search many more splash screen images to choose in the FlightSim libraries or any other FS library site such as Flyawaysim, you can even create your own Here's the FSX splash screen image I'm using. Caveat: If you are going to experiment with the FSX GUI Uires, I would suggest making a safety backup of your "Uires" folder. If anything goes pear shaped, at least you can restore the original folder with all its contents. Here's an example of the stock Sepia theme Uires basic layout for Free flight & Splash screen By Creator Christian Lambert - Flyawaysim https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/17826/sepia-fsx-theme/ Here's the Modern Blue GUI Theme Uires "Free Flight screen" By Creator Jiri Soukup - Flyawaysim https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/18209/fsx-blue-user-interface-replacement/ And the Metal one mentioned by Tim above. Courtesy of Creator Todd McCuistion - Flightsim Library I looks brutally metalized at first but you soon get used to the flashy brushed metal and checker plate modification. There are some really nice pictures in the download if you want to see the overall effect in the other setup screens before installation. https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?searchid=76161348
