From 1950 to 1967 the USAF set up and maintained bases in France, with the agreement of the French government, as part of its commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Laon AB was one of the ten main air bases which supported both attack and air defence capabilities. Many people do not appreciate the sheer extent of the USAF bases in France at this time and the reasons leading to the USAF departure in 1967. There is a link to a fine article on all this included. This is the second in a series of USAFE bases in France, the first being LFJA Chaumont AB. This scenery and traffic represent Laon Air Base during the years 1955 to 1962. Custom Tower and Hangars by Dan French with Custom aircraft paints by Ken Lawson and DeltaDart. Traffic files and the aircraft and paints needed are provided for 1955 (including the Black Knights B-57 Demonstration Team), 1957, 1959 and 1962. By Al Von Pingel, Ken Lawson, Dan French.

This scenery and its traffic represents Zaragoza AB (LEZG) in the Cold War era of the late 50s to early 60s. Zaragoza was one of three major Cold War US air bases in Spain, the others being Torrejon (also available here and at other sites) and Moron. Zaragoza served as a Reflex base for Strategic Air Command, hosting various B-47 units doing rotational duty at the base along with permanently assigned fighters for air defense purposes. It was shared with the Spanish Air Force which flew the F-86F. All of this is represented in this retro version of Zaragoza AFB including Traffic for 1958 and 1962. This scenery requires the installation of Zaragoza-1 by By Pablo Fernandez de Bobadilla, Jose Ramon Rodriguez and Diego Novillo. Information provided in the installation instructions. Full credit goes to them for the original modeling of the base. We have simply modified the ADE/AFCAD file and flightline elements to take it back to the time of the B-47 bombers and fighters of the late 50s and early 60s. Installation is simple and if you have installed our Torrejon and Wheelus retro sceneries most of the aircraft needed will already be present. By Al Von Pingel, Ken Lawson.

Wheelus AB was a USAF base located in Tripoli Libya until it was closed in 1970. Wheelus served many purposes: as a MATS station; as a Reflex base hosting various bombers for short rotations at different times; and as a gunnery and bombing training facility supporting many United States Air Forces in Europe squadrons which flew in for month long training sessions to practice live gunnery and bomb training exercises at the nearby El-Uotia Gunnery Range. This is also included in the scenery. Separate traffic is provided for 1955, 1957, 1959 and 1962, each schedule reflecting a mix of visiting squadrons and aircraft types. It can get to be a pretty colorful place if you install all those provided for. By Al Von Pingel, Ken Lawson and Dan French.

This scenery is a back dated treatment of John Stinstrom's great modern version of this important air base in the Azores. It covers the period 1955-1962 with complete ai traffic for four separate years. It is designed to be part of the California Classic environment but will also work as a standalone installation. Original scenery by John Stinstrom, this version by Al Von Pingel and Ken Lawson.

Imeson Field, as it was also known, has been long closed down and replaced by the Jacksonville International aiport (KJAX) in 1968. This scenery will bring back Imeson Field (and remove KJAX) to its glory days of the 1950s and 1960s with traffic files to match. Dan French has provided custom terminals, hangars and buildings for this project and Deltadart has provided many custom Military aircraft textures covering the many aircraft types employeed by the 159th FIS Forida Air National Guard during this period. This scenery is meant to work with the Calclassic retro environment by Tom Gibson and the Calclassic community. By Al Von Pingel

FS2004 Kindley Field Bermuda 1955-1962 Kindley Field, on the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, was built as a joint RAF/USAAF facility during the Second World War. Subsequently the RAF area became the civilian terminal while Kindley Air Force Base was operated by the USAF between 1948 and 1970. It was primarily a staging post between the US and Western Europe for land-based planes unable to cross the Atlantic non-stop, very like Ernest Harmon in Newfoundland and the civilian Gander, and like Harmon it closed when the jet age made such bases redundant. Prior to that it hosted no combat units, but the 59th and then 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadrons, the 'Hurricane Hunters', were based there, and also from 1 February 1956 to 15 June 1963 the 303rd ARS Stratotankers were present to support Strategic Air Command and other refueling requirements. After 1970 it became a US Navy facility primarily concerned with tracking Soviet submarines, and was closed at the end of the Cold War. This scenery represents Kindley between 1955 and 1962 and has custom made scenery by Dan French and ai military traffic by Al Von Pingel to add to the downloadable California Classic civilian and MATS traffic available at Tom Gibson's site. Like Harmon and Gander, it was one of the most important airfields of its time. By Ken Lawson, Al Von Pingel, Dan French

FS2004 1959 Chicago Midway Airport Scenery v2 This Airport was built from the original Joachim Neff and Tom Gibson version found on CalClassic Website. While this version started out as an attempt to update and add eye candy it is a complete rebuild of the airport. The only things that remain from the original are the North Terminal and some Billboards, everyting else is new or modified in some way. I have attempted to give it the look and feel as the airport was in 1957-59 era but all objects used are library objects. By AL VON PINGEL, JOACHIM NEFF AND TOM GIBSON

FS2004 1962 Birmingham Alabama Airport Scenery This scenery creates the Birmingham Municipal Airport circa 1962 (KBHM). Continued growth in passenger traffic by 1962 resulted in the construction of a second passenger terminal and a new air traffic control tower, built west of the original 1931 terminal. This was dedicated on February 11, 1962 as the Birmingham Air Terminal. Included are flight plans for the Alabama National Guard flights. During the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion, pilots and crews from the Alabama Air National Guard's 117th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Birmingham were selected to train Cuban exile fliers in Nicaragua to fly the Douglas B-26 Invader in the close air support role. FS2004 RAF Upper Heyford EGUA 1955-1962 EGUA RAF Upper Heyford The airfield was originally built in 1918 by the Royal Air Force on land owned by New College Oxford, closed briefly after the end of the First World War and then re-opened in the 1920s. During the Second World War it was used by units of RAF Bomber Command but these were training rather than operational forces, even if aircraft of the 16th OTU (Operational Training Unit) may sometimes have taken part in bombing operations against the Third Reich. New runways were laid in 1942. During the Cold War Upper Heyford was chosen as one of the airfields used to operate bomber aircraft belonging to the US Strategic Air Command, and in 1950 the main runway was extended while new hardstandings were constructed for the bombers concerned. However, units were not stationed there permanently, but did Temporary Duty Assignments from their bases in the US. They included the 93rd Bomb Wing, 97th Air Refueling Squadron, 509th Air Refueling Squadron, 301st Bomb Wing, 8th Air Sea rescue Squadron, 2nd Bomb Wing, 5th Bomb Wing Detachment, and the 22nd Bomb Wing. Aircraft included the B-50 Superfortress, (briefly) the B-36 Peacemaker, the B-47 and from 1960 the B-52. There were further significant developments after 1962 which fall outside the remit of this scenery, Upper Heyford being finally returned to the British Ministry of Defence in 1994 after the end of the Cold War.
